I am inclined to de-list some schools simply because their web sites either frustrate me or turn me off.
Note to admissions offices-- please make the entering class profile easy to find. That is one of the first things I look at to see whether a school might be a fit for my D.
Second note-- don't publish cutesy little quizes where every answer is essentially "this school is wonderful."
Third note-- please publish the number and size of any scholarships you list. (Okay, this should be directed to financial aid office.)
Fourth note-- be very clear about various categories for COA, i.e. don't list in-state tuition in link for WUE (Western University Exchange) unless that is the rate for the oos student under WUE. And if it is, make it clear that it is. (Again FA office.)

I like the Mizzou web site because when I first logged on, there was a picture of puppies.

I don't know why, but does it really matter?

Overall I would say the web site doesn't matter, but I do wonder if there is a correlation between the user friendliness of the web site and the helpfulness of the administration. A flaky, or arrogant, or . . . whatever . . site probably reflects the personality of one person in administration more than it does the student population. Nevertheless, the site is marketing, and some marketing turns me off (especially when I'm cranky).

In an environment where students receive daily letters and e-mails urging them to apply to colleges where they will almost certainly be rejected, I don't think we can expect much of the college Web sites. Both the messages and the Web sites are marketing tools, and college marketing is a very dubious thing.

I agree with the OP.
I like to go to each college websites multiple times for quick checks, e.g., mailing address or phone number or incoming class profile, or academic majors, etc. They should not waste our time. They should give easy links and pages should load quickly.
Brown U websiteis first page is a real pain. When you do www.brown.edu and if you mouse over from below to any of the links, the link moves up! Frustrating when you're in a hurry.

" like the Mizzou web site because when I first logged on, there was a picture of puppies"Pardon me i need to vomit

Be my guest.

As an International, tuition has been one of the most important factors in the college search...Some colleges hide their tuition fees so well that even the search tool can't find it. Why such a secret? Others have it on the first page under prospective students...as it should be.

I am entirely in favor of more puppies in the college admissions process.
