Julliard Acting Auditions

I will be auditioning for Julliard near Chicago Unifieds in Feb. and was wondering if any current Julliard students or actors who auditioned for them in previous years (off-site) could tell me about their audition experience. Thank you.

My S auditioned at Juilliard (and didn’t get in), so don’t know if this is helpful. But the callbacks were the same day, so you knew right away if you were being considered or not. (He was in a holding area with the dancers, who happened to be auditioning on the same day. Every one of the dancers looked identical–hair pulled back severely, bordering on anorexic, small. Very severe and a little surreal.)

My S thought his audition went well at the time, but he didn’t get a callback. They were friendly and intense at the same time. But they seemed (and still seem) to be looking for more mature, experienced actors, usually older than 18. I have heard it is not uncommon for you to have to audition twice to get in to Juilliard for acting, although I really have no idea if this is true. Of course, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t audition and of course you could get in to Juilliard right away, but imho, it does mean you should just go in, feel good about yourself, hope for the best, and have fun, and not to take too much meaning if you don’t get a callback. Best of luck. (By son got into Purchase & Tisch.)

I did read somewhere that Juilliard is starting an MFA program for actors who already have a Bachelor’s degree, so maybe they will be selecting mostly younger actors this time around?

Thanks for telling about your S’s audition. I do like the fact Julliard posts call-backs by the hour and you pretty much know if it’s a “No” right away. Did your S choose Purchase or Tisch? I am also auditioning for Tisch. Luckily there are about eight “top” schools I am auditioning for (already admitted to two safeties and have 3 fits on my list, also). I would love any of them and do not have my heart set on any particular one, so I will be able to do as you suggest - go in, have fun, do my best - whatever is meant to be, will be.

Yes, you are right. They have a new Drama Dept. video that says the BFA and MFA students work together on some classes/projects and separately on others, so they do offer advanced Drama degrees. Hopefully this would help younger students (like me) have a better chance.

Just an FYI - Yes, they do have a MFA program but they’ve always had one! It was just in a “diploma” degree. I feel now that there is an MFA - the admission process will be more difficult. I know any young actors who attend that program and I will say the thing that stands out about those actors isn’t their work… but them as PEOPLE.

Go in there prepared and show them who you are and you should have no problem with getting called back. Knock em dead!

@hoveringmom Many people have auditioned more than once. It’s very normal!

complexlife, not sure what you mean? By auditioning 'twice" I mean that you have to wait a minimum of a full year for the following year’s auditions. I don’t mean callbacks, of course. I have to disagree with you that that’s ‘very normal.’ Most students I know would not take a year off of school and re-apply a year later on the off chance they may be accepted again. Of course, some people would. But I disagree that it’s ‘normal.’
