You could also wait to coordinate this with your roommate. You don’t want to start off the roommate relationship by imposing, but if your roomie is driving up from NY with his/her parents and is getting stuff shipped to BB&B, you can ask if said roomie can also get your stuff at the same time (and you’ll come along in the car to help load and unload).

Speaking as a parent, I’d say a student shouldn’t ask to go along with their new roommate on the BBB run. It’s a stressful time for parents, who are spending the last bit of time with their freshmen sons or daughters. If a new roommate had some sort of extenuating circumstances–e.g. a home medical emergency so no parent could be at move-in–I’d be willing to help out. Not wanting to rent a car? Not so much.

^ I wouldn’t have minded, but we’d removed all the extra seats from our minivan, so there wouldn’t have been anywhere to sit!

Has anyone bought from Residence Hall Linens? I got a letter in the mail today advertising their packs. It would make things very easy to order from them but I am wondering about the quality.

I have a question about orientation day for 2017 class.

After noon time matriculation ceremony, what else will parents do? I vaguely remembered that there are talks for pre-med students and parents, but could not find that info anymore. Can anyone explain a bit about that day’s activities?

My flight is 6pm on that day back home. I don’t know how bad/good the traffic is on Wed in Boston. What’s the latest time I should head to the airport by your experience?

thank you!

Orientation itinerary is available on Tufts website.
[Orientation for New Students - Student Services - Tufts University](http://studentservices.tufts.edu/orientation/calendar/)

The morning is mostly optional and until noon is move-in plus a talk by one of the Associates Deans of Undergraduate Education. It is followed by lunch on the lawn and then matriculation. Matriculation ends at roughly 2:45 - 3:00 p.m. I would plan to say your goodbyes and leave within 15 minutes of that to makes sure that you make your flight, skipping the optional afternoon programs (they aren’t very important, mostly a quick third intro to the university or specific programs within it). Your child can tell you all about those over the phone in the following couple of days. Your son or daughter will have plenty of things to do starting immediately after Matriculation anyway (I think by 4:00 they have to meet with their advising group).

I just got eBill from Tufts. there is:
MEDICAL INSURANCE-UNDERGRAD $2,037.00

We have PPO, so I would like to waive this insurance. But there is no anywhere allows me to do it. What should I do, maybe call the school?

fromcalifornia: you have until July 15 to waive the health insurance. There is a special link to complete the medical info, and to choose to waive. I’m currently looking into whether my anthem health plan meets the MA state requirements. I assume it does but have been looking into this in order to meet the 7/15 deadline. Anthem doesn’t have coverage specific to MA so I will be paying out of network fees if needed.

Other parents - Do you recommend keeping family health plan or going with the Tufts insurance plan?

Thanks! I saw the link when my son login. It was not there if I log in.

Is your Anthem is HMO or PPO? PPO does not matter which state, I assume. Mine is high deductible PPO, so I will pay the first $3k out of pocket no matter where we are. Maye out of network doctor charges more though.

XcountryMom, I would waive. Eight grand over four years is a lot of money, and you can essentially “self-insure” with respect to the out-of-network costs. I imagine that you will almost certainly come out on top, and no matter what I can’t imagine you coming out the loser too badly.

My Freshman son got the dorm assigned. it’s South Hall. I checked it’s not a dorm for Freshmen only. But I guess it’s OK, not necessary it’s the best to be in Freshman only dorm right?

Not sure if it’s close to the swimming pool and classrooms?

His roommate is from Boston area and sent him an email already. Nice kid.

Do students ride bike on campus if it’s too far?

Looks like we can ship stuff to the dorm after 8/6. I guess they just pile all the stuff in a room, then new students declare them later after they arrive on 8/28.

@fromcali

MY D1 lived in South as a frosh and D2 is living there as a sophomore. All frosh dorms are fun, but it is also nice to get to know some upperclassmen and have hall mates that can answer questions. South is a “downhill” dorm, recently renovated, not that near the pool which is on the edge of campus (but still only a short walk). Proximity to classes depends on the classes. Some departments are uphill on the academic quad and will be a walk. Other classes are down hill and will be close. Said hill makes biking uncommon on the Tufts campus - most just walk.

My son lived in south hall as a freshman and loved it. The dining hall down hill is newer. I think the only buildings that are close are chemistry and art. But everything else is not that far. Maybe 10 minutes walk. I didn’t see anyone biking. But the walking is good for them. Keeps off that freshman 15. When we visited last October I noticed how in shape everyone was. It’s a very health conscious campus. South hall is also closer to Davis square if they want to go into Boston.

My child lived in South as a freshman last year and enjoyed it just fine. Liked the proximity to Dewick, which supposedly is the better dining hall. Main complaint was that getting to the gym requires either walking up and then down a steep hill, or taking a less severe but more circuitous route. Which when you play a sport means you’ll be making the walk a lot.

Dorm room was 20’L x 9’ W, plenty long but quite narrow. Description & floor plan here:

Hi,

I was wondering how you found out about shipping. Would you please send me what you found:). Thanks for the tip!

it’s in my son’s email from Tufts about the housing.

email subject: Tufts University Housing Information

the email content has:

YOUR MAILING ADDRESS (Where to ship your belongings after August 5, 2013):
XXX
SOUTH HALL XXX
Tufts University, Medford, MA 02155

so I guess we can ship after 8/5. I might be wrong though.

My son waived the Tufts insurance. But the bill did not change (deducts the $2037 from the origianl amount). It just added one row: medical insurance waived payment $2037.

I guess we pay th full bill , then get refund from Tufts.

Anyone knows?

I believe it is just a time delay and will come off of the bill in a day or two.

Last year we got an email from Tufts when the new bill was ready. I would wait. You don’t have to pay until early August. There’s no rush
