Thank you! I didn’t see that. I’m so glad you mentioned this. This is going to help us tremendously:).

XCountrymom- I don’t see a deadline anywhere of July 15 to waive insurance. Where did you see that?

It looks like the medical insurance waiver is due by August 1:

[Tufts University: Undergraduate Student Transitions](http://uss.tufts.edu/studentConnection/FirstYear/gettingStarted/summerChecklist.asp)

The immunization form was due on July 15.

For those of you who waived health insurance and don’t see it reflected on your bill. I just spoke to Tufts. You need to go to ‘Recent activity’ on the home page of your ebill account and it will be reflected there. I guess they changed it from last year

I did ‘recent activity’. it shows:
Bill Name Activity as of Outstanding Balance New Charges New Credits
Recent Activity For Health Sciences Bill 7/18/2013 $29,294.00 $0.00 - $2,037.00

still did not give me a new bill = original $$ - $2037.

My son waived it on 7/11, I still have not received a new bill. It has been a week already.

$29,294 is the correct amount. If you look at the previous bill, it’s over $31,000

No, since my son is a national merit finalist, he got $4000 scholarship. school deducts $2000 for each semester. plus waive insurance, I am expecting around $27000 bill.

Call them.

I am going to be a freshman this fall at tufts and my roommate and I are working out the refrigerator situation. We probably won’t rent one of the microfridges b/c I hear they’re not great quality and are overpriced. Basically this is my question: will I need another mini fridge next year when I’m a sophomore or do most sophomores live in suites that come with refrigerators?

If I will need another mini fridge next year my parents will just buy the mini fridge for my roommate and I to share and I’ll store it in medford this summer until next year. If I won’t, my roommate and I will share the cost and sell or throw out the fridge at the end of our freshman year. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Depends. Latin Way has refrigerators, as do the frats and sororities, but I don’t think any of the other dorms that sophomores stay in have easily accessible fridges.

You may find that you don’t actually need a fridge. It’s nice to have for milk and such but you can do without one. I would split the costs with your roommate and either offer to buy his share at the end of the year or sell your share (or the fridge jointly). And who knows, maybe your sophomore year roommate will have a fridge to bring to the table.

Freshman year my son had a microfridge and was very happy with it. I know it’s expansive, but he shared with his roommate and the drop off/pickup was very convenient. He did popcorn all the time. And had frozen pizza when he was studying late and didn’t feel like going out for food. Next year his roommate is bringing a fridge. As far as I know non of his friends that are living in suites have access to fridges next year.

Do we need to buy a fan? My son’s dorm is on 4th floor, South Hall. Not sure how hot it is in Medford in Aug/Sept.

Yes. A fan would be helpful. It can get pretty hot. I think we got a 10" fan.

Should we bring the dress shoe and suit? I don’t know if there is a chance the Freshman needs to be dress up in the 1st semester. If there is no need for the 1st semester, my son can bring it in 2nd semester or 2nd year. Now our luggage are quite full.

For South Hall washing machine, do you use liquid or powder detergent? We will buy those once arriving at Medford next Mon.

Thanks for the help!

My Tufts student says there is opportunity to dress up- but a nice pair of slacks, button down and tie would get him through the first semester.

Pair of khakis and a nice shirt is enough. Buy him detergent pods. More comfortable then carrying big box of detergent with him.

So far, my son is having a great time at Tufts. He likes the campus, students and classes. The swimming team went to New Hampshire last night and back today. He said Tufts has a lodge there, Wao!

I just wonder about the adviser. I remembered that TuftsStudent and momworried mentioned that you and your son have a pre-med adviser. My son said he has pre-major adviser. I asked him if it’s pre-med adviser, he said NO. He told me sometime ago in the summer he told the school he is interested in pre-med during the survey. I don’t know how critical it is to have a pre-med adviser vs regular adviser.

There is only 1 or 2 pre-med advisors in Tufts. They’re not assigned to a particular student but rather available to all pre-med students for advice. This is different then pre-major advisors. Those are assigned to students until the student picks his major advisor by the end of sophomore year. Your son can make an appointment with pre-med advisor just to touch base and discuss the classes he’s planning to take before the next registration.
BTW, I’m just curious, did your son end up taking Bio 13 and Chem this semester? I know you mentioned before that he wanted to do that.

Thanks, momworried. The pre-med adviser is in health or medical school dept?

No, he did not. I told him your suggestion that he should not take both together. Before he started, he still wanted to take them together. But after talked with group leader who is a premed, he changed his mind. Only chem1. He is taking intro to sociology due to psychology’s schedule is conflicting with chem lab.

He is taking one writing class. I don’t know why since he got 5 on AP Lang, he could skip all the writing class. He said he likes it. I heard that some medical schools need one year English though. Do you know that?

You’ve got to get an 800 on the Writing portion of the SAT to get out of taking the freshman writing class.
