No limit on tickets. Main ceremony on the quad rain or shine in the morning. Diploma ceremony by major in various venues around campus throughout the rest of the day. If you need one get your hotel room now…Tufts is usually not the only graduation happening given the 33 or so colleges in Boston. Rooms get expensive and disappear fast.
bumping for ED2 2020
My daughter was recently accepted ED2 (and is thrilled), and I have a question. I assume Tufts has some kind accepted student event(s) on campus in the spring - just wondering what that consists of and is it worth spending the money to go out there, when she has already made her decision? I think she is leaning toward doing one of the pre-orientation events, which seems like a worthwhile thing to do.
Parent of an E19 here, I was not impressed with Tufts’ Jumbo Days relative to some other school’s programs. It just wasn’t much of a “show”. The classes we sat in on were a little boring and there wasn’t much “pop”. So I guess if you are asking for opinions, I would skip it if your D has made her decision. My D had basically made up her mind and going to Jumbo Days didn’t really move the needle in either direction.
Pre-O is a great option if you have the time. It didn’t really work out for my Daughter, but she says everyone she talked to about it loved their programs. (her TWO trip was too difficult for her and she didn’t really gel with the group that well because of it)
Thank you for the candid observations on both programs. I’m guessing she will probably will skip the Jumbo Days and try to make the Pre-O work.
Jumbo days are probably not worth it if she has already decided. Pre-Oorientation is definitely worth it. Both my DDs loved their pre-O program, even the daughter who got sick in the middle of the TWO hike and had to leave before the end. They made great friends and felt like they had a head start on their first year.
Some schools exclude students who were accepted through ED from the spring programs to limit numbers (and to keep the focus on winning over the undecided. ) I don’t know what Tufts does, but you may want to find out before you spend a lot of time thinking about it.
Parent of a female freshman here. My daughter attended both Jumbo Day (+overnight stay) and the pre orientation called FOCUS. She was absolutely positive Tufts was the right school for her, we mainly did the Jumbo day as a celebration. She just wanted to be there!!! FOCUS was not her first choice for pre orientation but she absolutely loved it. The group leaders have been amazingly supportive and they all get together for dinners and parties. The academic year has (so far) been great. I’m just thrilled with how happy my daughter is and how much she’e grown in these six months!
Thank you all. Glad to know you’re out there as I will probably have more questions!
Parent of a sophomore who was also admitted ED2. Although she already knew she was attending Tufts, we all attended Jumbo Day in the spring. Our experience was very, very positive and we were all thrilled that we went. My daughter was incredibly excited and felt so welcomed at Tufts. The energy was really great. (And, by the way, Tufts loved having the ED kids there and made a point of identifying them.)
She did not do a pre-orientation for a couple of reasons, (one of them being financial…they are a few thousand dollars I believe). Her friends who did them seemed to really enjoy them and bonded with other kids in their program. My daughter did say that initially she felt a bit regretful that she hadn’t done it as she felt she had missed out on a bonding experience. However, within a few days she felt connected to students and it no longer mattered to her that she had not done a pre-orientation program. The freshman orientation program (for all freshman) definitely helps to foster bonding. If you can attend a Jumbo Day though I think its very worth while but not necessary. And, of course it depends on how easy it would be for you to make the trip.
I believe that those on financial aid can get some financial assistance for pre-orientation…
Pre-O without aid is less than $500 for sure
The website said it was $400 for all of the pre-o programs
I don’t think Tufts excludes ED admits from Jumbo days. We did not go because we live in Los Angeles, but Tufts (I think through Tufts Parent Giving, but I’m not sure) also arranges mixers for admitted students around the country who don’t make it to Jumbo Days due to the distance. Ours was in July, hosted by the parents of a sophomore, and both parents and students were invited. It was very worthwhile for my daughter, who connected with a couple of kids (one is now a close friend), and made college very real and exciting for her. I know the organizer of the event was traveling to one in Orange County as well, and there were additional similar events around the country. If one is happening near you, you will get some kind of invitation.
Hmmm…I’m not sure why I thought they were much more expensive…Perhaps I’m mistaken.
Anybody who did not have their student apply for FA as a freshman have success getting FA for following years?
Thank you
Anybody have any insight into what is average rent for off campus housing very close to campus?
Thank you
My son’s rent is $725 a month. This does not include utilities. He is very close to campus. He is on the first floor of a duplex with three other students who also pay $725 each.
Thank you…that sounds pretty good compared to the $900 we’ll pay for my D; also very close to campus and no utilities (other than water) included.
Also wondering about possibly renting some bedroom furniture…just found out D’s summer rental is unfurnished while her fall sublet is furnished.
Thank you
