For freshman, second semester.
Is there still a Facebook page for Jumbo Parents? I did a search and only came up with Class of 2104 and the Jumbo Parents Giving Program groups. Is there a general Tufts Parent group on Facebook?
@Mastadon, thank you.
I’ve enjoyed reading and participating in many of the discussions regarding Tufts from a Jumbo parent perspective. I have a junior doing well there.
Can someone explain to me the logic and or origin of the “chance me” posts that frequent this forum? I have yet to see the point? Apparently, kids seem to think posting information about themselves to an anonymous group following Tufts is helpful? It is pretty sad on some level to think that they cannot just apply and manage their application process. Or is it a larger generation issue of TMI? On the other hand, I do enjoy finding out where people come out on admissions days – accepted, etc – at least it give a sense of the diversity of the group and geographical make up of potential Jumbos.
I only bring it up as it seems like an issue that is somewhat unsettling to me, not sure why, just a gut instinct. I think kids need a little more confidence or a little less – not sure how to read it. That said, I hope all the parents here are doing well with the new college year and I do appreciate the discussion on topical issues.
It’s widespread on all CC sites, certainly not peculiar to Tufts. I don’t know why kids do it. It seems like they should be able to figure out by themselves if they are a reasonable candidate.
Tufts housing question: D will be a junior next year and plans to live off campus with friends. She also plans to study abroad for 2nd semester. Is this common? What happens with her housing? Obviously, we don’t want to pay rent when she isn’t there. She tells us students sublet under these circumstances. Anybody have any experience with this?
Thank you!
It’s very common. Those that study abroad fall semester end up swapping places with those who study abroad spring semester. D1 (studied abroad fall) ended up subletting from a friend (studied abroad spring).
Oh good golly, I fall for this thread whenever it pops into “Latest Posts” … I always think it’s a thread about plus-sized parents…lol …
@njmom666 - I think this is pretty common.
Our daughter signed a lease for off-campus housing starting the June after her sophomore year.
She was able to sublet it at reduced rate for the first summer, at full rate during first semester junior year (when she was abroad) and she lived in it the summer between her junior and senior years when she had a summer internship in downtown Boston.
There is a pretty active market for subletting in the summer because of all the summer research/internships in the Somerville/Cambridge/Boston region along the Red Line.
There is also an active market during the school year due to many students going abroad.
This path will require some work on your daughter’s part to find subletters, so it is not without risk. We took our daughter’s word that she would make it work, then crossed our fingers (while holding the money saved on meals as a partial reserve). There were some anxious moments, but it did work out and some valuable life lessons were learned.
All in all, I would say that living off campus helped smooth the transition from college life to working life, so there is some benefit to offset the risk.
Thank you. Very helpful replies.
More Tufts housing questions: So, for several reason’s beyond D’s control, she hasn’t been able to arrange as of yet for junior year housing. Wants to live with 2 friends; each student will study abroad so looking to sublet or to sign a lease and find others to sublet. D is very concerned that they have missed the window for arranging this.
Any thoughts, suggestions? Thank you!
My son has already signed a lease but needs to find a sub-letter for fall semester when he wants to go abroad. His apt is nice and it’s a block or two from professors row. He’s the only kid of the 5 who’s going away, I think, bc he’s living with engineers. His roommates are 3 guys and a girl (who is good friends with everyone but never dated any of the guys). So, there’s one possible sublet for her! I’ve got to tell my son to start hanging posters around campus to sublet his apt!
And I don’t think she’s missed the boat. Take a look at the tufts off-campus housing webpage for resources.
The listings section of Tufts Life is a good place to find/post available apartments. The events section is good for seeing what is happening on campus
Thanks all! I ended up calling the Off Campus Housing Resource Center…It seems that there is plenty of time. I shared this info with m D and she is much calmer now and will put things on hold until January.
Thanks again!
Bumping for new ED Jumbo Parents - ask questions here!
Just wondering if reservations are made years in advance at LaQuinta and Medford Hyatt Place, etc., for the graduation dates. Or are accommodations in surrounding Boston just so numerous that one doesn’t give future dates much of a thought? Thanks.
I found you couldn’t get reservations more than a year in advance (though airbnb/vrbo/etc may be different). We stayed at a place in Boston proper, right near the Red Line (so easy access to Tufts and no need for a car). Tufts also offers accommodations on campus in the dorms; reservations for those rooms are available in the months leading up to graduation.
Be prepared to pay big bucks during graduation season, just like you’ve been paying big bucks for the previous four years.
Hi all! My daughter decided that Tufts was definitely “the one” - I knew she was certain when she attended an overnight (she’s an athlete) during a Nor’easter and LOVED it. She applied ED 1 and was admitted, so the search is over, happily.
I was reading through this thread and saw a couple of references to a FB page for Tufts parents. People asked whether there was one, but never saw any replies. Is there? (I will take silence as a no ).
Does anyone know about graduation? Is it inside or outside? Are there limited number of tickets per family?
