I vaguely remember something about impertinent challenge. I believe that was the answer I put

“My hope hangs waning, waxing, like a moon
Between the heavenly days on which we meet.”

I dunno, I can see it both ways. I put quietly suspended because I took it to mean that her hope sort of lulled when he was gone (waned) and then rebounded when she knew he was coming (waxed). That made more sense to me than a hope that was constantly fluctuating. I can see both answers as correct, honestly…

^Haha, happy to see someone also chose suspended with me.

I just didn’t see her hope constantly fluctuating but…I dunno.

Blarg =[

Yeah, I’m really not sure now looking back, but I remember putting a lot of thought into the question at the time. Maybe too much thought, lol… I might be just over-reaching here but she didn’t seem like she was having too much change in degree of hope, just that when he was going to come see her, she became hopeful, when he left she was thrown into sorrow again to stay until his return. If only College Board let us explain our responses! ;)

P.S. Does anyone remember the question on the lillies poem, what does “just” mean? I put merely, but I’m pretty sure that’s wrong… the other answers were: precisely, lawful and right, something else…?

the analogy you just made with white/pink does make sense, but could you be reading too deeply into the question? i suppose i am simply unfamiliar with the expression.

on the basis of my own life experience [i confess], i am sticking with my gut on the “simplistic and unhelpful.” if yolanda is as critical of herself as i am, she would not accept such a “simplistic and unhelpful” response. the test took the words right out of my mouth. :)

I agree andreanw… The mom said “it’s better to be a happy nobody than a sad somebody” or something like that, and that’s just the kind of useless fluff advice that doesn’t help anyone. It’s like arguing that white is better than pink… no substance, just giving advice for the sake of giving it. Just my .02

The lillies question was along the lines of “truthful and real beauty” as the answer…

Lawful took the “just” too literally.

I’m looking at around -7 right now.

she didnt reluctantly reject her mother…she didnt like her mother and hence didnt want to agree with her…u guys are overthinking it…the answer was most likely simplistic and unhelpful…

Also the answer to the first passage was not deceitful, but actually large…I don’t know where anyone got the idea that it was deceitful, of course she was misleading she was trying to seduce the man! Synonyms of deceitful: insincere, disingenuous, false, hollow, designing, tricky, wily. 2. illusory, fallacious. She was definitely tricky.

Lastly, I put pathetic fallacy instead of epic simile…the last paragraph’s description of nature kind of paralleled the action of the story…i think i may be wrong this one though

It’s deceitful. The narrator clearly shows that she is large with the epic similes of comparison to a lion and pike.

And epic simile was present in the comparisons using as, when the woman was compared to a “voracious” pike and lion.

Edit: And how is directly trying to seduce someone deceitful? Her intentions were plain and honest.

its not large becuase there was a line that called her an enormous pike. enormous. large

for the moon question, i felt the suspended answer was too specific: “it dimly light her lonely nights”. Nowhere does it talk about her lonely nights, and her hope waxed and waned not only at her lover’s physical distance but also thinking about her situation (the first two lines… hoping for him to come and then thinking about the consequences)

and simplistic and unhelpful is probably right, because the white/pink analogy is used as a counterpoint against her mother’s advice

if i’m lucky, i have like a -3/-4 right now… what’s the Lit curve?

seduce- to lead or draw away, as from principles, faith, or allegiance

I don’t know, I just don’t think the point of that animal similes were to show that she was fat insomuchas to show that she was roping in Joseph.

malapropism was definitely one of them. it was not euphemisms.

oh yeah. this sat ii was administered in january. i remember looking through the threads and someone posted the lily passage. ( i did not actually view the answers that were being discussed though.)

Yup. Lily and the crazy woman were both in January

i put for the white hands invulnerable…why not

pyroza, did you take the test in jan? if so do u know how the curve was?

for crazy lady, i had no idea that the woman was trying to seduce the joseph guy. that’s why i put down one of my answers as “lust” as not being one of the answers. i feel so idiotic now

also, for the people who were supposed to find it funny, i put down reader, writer, and joseph. it seems right to me

yeah, i put that the reader, writer, and joseph were amused as well.

A) Joseph Andrews
- Woman is not lustful. (The woman is ironic because she acts civilized and learned but at the same time her words are all wrong… Although I suppose lustful would work because she doesn’t want to restrain her passions, but at the time I didn’t understand it).
- Intended to find amusing: reader, writer, and Joseph.
- All is a metaphor for Joseph except: pike
- Woman used malapropism
- Main theme was greed
- Oh Jo! Expression of ardent desire
- “Lucky” shows writers sympathies
- resulted and ironed = insulted and mocked
- all but deceitful
- last few lines used epic simile
- liquid element = inflated diction (I actually put paradox because “liquid” contrasts with “element”… sigh)
- ironic modesty (other choicse were hypocritical piety)
