June 2010: International

where are internationals??? 0.o
as far as I remember, the passages were:

  • one about someone who has an old enclyclopedia or something
  • about travelling on motorbike (this one was easy right?)
  • about ‘squid’ (kind of sea monster)
  • about a mother with Chinese origin
    anyone wants to discuss??
I hate the one about ‘squid’, it took sooo much time :frowning:
btw, I remember almost nothing about vocab :P

can anyone explain what -2/3 or 2/3 question is?
I do not remember such question…

anyone chose “judgmental” on the short passage about a girl who is quite odd or something?
about traveling on motorbike, anyone picked “dangerous situation”, “convenience”, and “the truth varies from regions to regions”?
a mother with a Chinese origin: anyone picked “difficult undertaking”?

sorry thats all i can recall now :(

what’s the answer to the one in the Chinese origin passage, asking what caused the author’s “equanimity” when the mother told her that her grandmother has bound feet??? On that line in the passage, the sentence was along the the lines of “My mother spoke in such a nonchalant (or probably some synonymous word) that I thought everyone’s grandmothers had feet measuring 3 and a half inches”.

–> Is the answer because of the “mother’s manner of speaking”, or because of the “author’s assumption about the past generations”??? PLEASE REPLY!!!

i said those people were close knit. The passage had a line somewhere that said the girl was surprised to be included in the circle, given how long those people were together, etc.

i don’t think I answered something about “truth varies from regions to regions”… what question was that??

i can’t remember the other ones :frowning: do u recall the questions?? or at least some key words in the questions?

I think its “author’s assumption about the past generations” :-?
i dont think its close-knit, she’s not surprised when she finds everyone so byzantine :-S
“the truth varies…” is the last question on the motorbike passage…

Can’t remember the first one you’re talking about, however the motorcycle passage had to do with the father’s feeling of freedom when he rode it. It gave him the sense of being extremely close to a situation, places, and people. The passage didn’t mention him finding the danger of the situation alluring in any way.
‘Difficult undertaking’ is right.

The mother’s manner of speaking. She told the stories in such way, that they sounded dispassionate, emotion-less.

Is it true that you don’t get points deducted for incorrect answers on the grid-in sections?

This is correct. ^

Agree with both, II and III, as well as -2/3.

its like “twisting roads are blah blah, you dont get swung around blah blah…” so i picked dangerous situation. freedom is on there, but somewhere in other questions.

one about someone who has an old enclyclopedia or something

about travelling on motorbike (this one was easy right?) –> i think this was one of the short passages

about ‘squid’ (kind of sea monster)

about a mother with Chinese origin

about a person whom people thought she was odd (one of the short passages)

as far as I remember, one the sentence completions there were words like
allure…facetious (this was one of the wrong choices :frowning: I think the correct answer was other one but I don’t remember)
ravenous

one of the passages
question was like line sth about new appreciation?? in the chinese origin passage
and one of the answer choices I chose was like “motivation…unforthcoming?”

sry that doesn’t much help
but yeah I chose the close knit one

come on guys we should get this discussion going
any internationals???

seriously I think I have memory loss problem
I can’t recall any questions and I took the test this morning …

Math:

The one with the chart of direct flights, Is the answer D? The figure looks like an M shape or something. I think B was connected to everything else, and the others were connected to 2 other letters.

Trinkets question, they made triangles, circles and squares, the question was how many triangles were made –> A: 250

Similar triangles, one side had the ratio 70:35, question asked 200:? –> A:100

Set X (R, some other letters), Set Y (W, X), how many pairs has R as the first letter –> A: 2

The parabola question, what is a –> A: 1/4

L = 2w, divided into 8 squares, what’s the side of the square in terms of L –> A:1/4 L

a^3 = b^2, what’s a possible value for a and b –> A: E (II and III)

18 trapezoids

27 in the number line

17 as a possible value for the (x+k) (7x+h) = 7x^2 + cx + 6

Charts with people who had eaten in the new restaurant and the distance from the restaurant A: 84% haven’t eaten; 8 had eaten

The one with 2 circles tangent to each other, radius r, and then a right triangle was formed. It asks for the length of the longer leg in terms of r. A: r sqrt of 3

Cost of 6 lines in a magazine/newspaper A: 9.75

The one with the triangle and the legs were extended, some of those angles were given, asks you to order x, y, z from least to greatest A: z, y, x

ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER ANYTHING??

WRITING:

I really really had a harder time in Sec 6. Sec 3 was soooo like the CB tests I took, one of them had the exact same phrasing except different words. Like in BB Test 9 Sec 3 #29: As the archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas a Becket assumed an independence that was intolerable to the king, who had long been his friend. Sounds familiar??

What were the NE’s? I seriously cannot remember much from the writing section.

In sec 6 #2, is the answer E? It was something about Cinderella… “blahblah, and yet it is blahblah”. Sorry, really can’t remember.

Then in sec 10 last number about the aloe vera, answer is B? I think there was a verb error?

Something about indigo dye, was that NE?

For the Tom Cruise braces thing, which sentence should be omitted –> I said the one Tom Cruise having the money for braces because they’re expensive, etc, I think it was sentence 11?

Which should be added –> I said “If Tom Cruise has the courage to face the whole world blahblah, then who I am I to complain?”

Williams sisters, the first question (I think) about how people are surprised they’re sisters –> my answer was A, “that Venus and Serena are sisters”

Best title for Williams sisters –> Champion Sisters

Okay, I really can’t remember anything  ANYONE ELSE??

The ‘not getting swung around’ bit is a reference to the control he has over the motorcycle, unlike when he drives a car, he is able to manage the journey more freely.

I think I put the freedom thing?

yeah I think I had something about “motivation…unforthcoming”

Also, in the Chinese passage again, why did the author not ask until she was an adult “the mother successfully made her not care much” something like that?

I connected that answer to the first question, quoted lines 1-7, about what was the reaction of the author to her mother’s indifference –> I answered E. The other choices were like she became curious about mother’s motivation, wanted to learn chinese/about relatives, etc

Why did the mother not talk about her past –> coz didn’t wanna remember (can’t remember the exact phrasing)

Why did the author (in the last paragraph) say it’s like a “map” etc (referring to the list of names and phone numbers her mother gave her before she died) –> can’t remember the answers, it was a fairly easy one I think

Quoted a line about “my mother probably felt bad…” –> answer was something about she gave her the list of numbers etc?? can’t remember the answers!! :(

Quoted “I started answering/returning the calls of my mother’s past” –> started contacting

so far I got all the same answers as yours for Math section

really??? I found section 6 a lot easier than section 3
i panicked when I was doing the section 3
which one do you think will be experimental??

lauralei – are you sureeeee? coz the other choice was also mentioned :(

The old encyclopedia passage:

– the passage never mentioned that the author found the encyclopedia when he/she was young right??? A question asked something like "why did the author list those stuff he/she found in the encyclopedia (it was a whole paragraph, second one I think) –> I said to show variety of topics, NOT to show/indicate the stuff the author found interesting when the author was YOUNG. Is that correct??

I really really hope it was sec 6. Maybe it was because sec 3 came first, so I wasn’t feeling tired or anything. But I really found the questions in sec 6 different!!! Sec 3 was sooo predictable for me! Do you remember any questions in the writing sections??

Ohyeah and I hated sec 10 :frowning: I hope I didn’t make any careless errors. For some reason the time went by so quickly!!!
