Thanks for the link @jym626. A thread from test-takers and parents popped up almost as soon as the test was over.
There will be reverberations beyond this one test, due to superscoring, scholarships that are dependent upon SAT results, etc.
Colleges relied on the SAT, in part, because it made vetting candidates easier. Now that the SAT is a problem, I wonder if it will hasten the move toward test-optional.
What do you mean by “due to learning differences”?
Does anyone know how this error will impact kids that had extra time due to learning differences?
ADHD
Well I don’t know if I’m quite answering your question here, but I expect those types of students would’ve found hit harder to concentrate, therefore; hindered those students from performing to the best of their abilities.
My D took this test. She said the proctors at her school realized the error early so they warned everyone the time on the test was a misprint. Apparently it caused no issues for her test. I hope it doesn’t cause the score to be questioned because she felt she did much better this time than the first time she took it.
Yeah the same thing happened to me, but it’s still unfair to students like your daughter and me because so many other students nationwide received extra time.
@jackiek63 I also took this test with accommodations. According to my SAT prep teacher if it affects everyone, this will include students with extended time because a) they could have had the error on their tests as well and b) extended time is calculated by the amount of time given for each section. For example on a 20 min section some one receiving time and a half (50% extended) lie myself receives 30 minutes on a 20 minutes section and 38 minutes on a 25 minute section. Hope this helps.
But how will they differentiate between those who received extra time and those who didn’t? Or those who were expecting to have extra time because of the misprint, but then got cut off before they were done. Everyone may have had the misprint, but that doesn’t mean all testing centers handled it the same way. I don’t see how they can make any adjustments to the scores because some people were timed correctly, some received extra time, and some of those that were timed correctly mistakenly thought they should have had more. Some were helped by the mistake and some were hurt by it. I think the only thing College Board can do is offer everyone a discounted or free retest.
That’s the issue, they really cant tell. Its really starting to look like all scores will be invalidated with a free retest. One error caused this big mess.
Here is the answer. They are not scoring the affected sections but say they will still provide scores for the entire test:
https://lp.collegeboard.org/information-regarding-the-saturday-june-6-sat-administration
I guess this means reading and math scores will be based on only two sections of the test.
I’m glad the scores are not being canceled.
Oh boy…
Anyone think they’ll offer a free retake?
I am hoping that they get enough backlash to offer a retake. My DC is so upset over this. October was supposed to be subject tests and then she’d be done. Now who knows. She hit some stumbling blocks in the first 2 sections of the test and felt like she aced the rest. Bummer. I want to cry for her.
Same here. Slow start for the first two sections and then got into a good pace and felt good about the last sections of CR and M. What a shame!
Some of you may think I’m nuts but I just emailed a couple of the colleges that my son may apply to. I ask them if they would be treating the June SAT scores the same or if my son should retake the test to validate his scores.
I just got a response back from one of the colleges. They are taking a wait and see approach at this time…UGH
They should offer a free and optional retake. This is absurd and completely unprofessional on the part of the collegeboard.
