June SAT Essay Discussion

the only way to achieve happiness is through others peoples happiness, or something close to that..

i had heroes. i did oskar schindler and charles lindbergh.

We're supposed to use quotes from books? I did heroes, wrote 2 pages, 4 pararaphs, but didn't speak of any books since they didn't ask me in the essay directions.

I remember the quote but not the prompt, and I think I was basing my essay as more of a refutation of the quote, so I hope that the prompt was what I'm thinking it must have been based on the quote (something like "can happiness truly be had without focusing on a larger goal?").

I said that altruism isn't necessary for happiness and offered examples of greed (Adam & Eve and referenced the extension of it to their sons Cain & Abel in conclusion) and explained how the existence of greed proved that happiness can exist standalone from individual drives, even if it's not exactly moral, because there could be no other reason for greed in the first place if the end result didn't make somebody happy.

you dont HAVE to use books reppintha. but its good to use examples from a lot of sources, including literature.

I didn't go the literary route...instead took up two full pages describing my own experiences with happiness. I guess I'll see how they liked it in a few weeks...

i did heroes and went with FDR and MLK... was a little upset I couldn't use literature though lol

I didn't like the heroes topic, although I thought that my essay wasn't too bad. I liked March's topic, which was on expectations I think.

i used henry thoreau, an american transcendentalist who lived in the woods, and my own experiences. Is the thoreau ex. legit?

I used the qote "All men are treated equal". I went the experience route. Just sayng with heroes and inspiration, I'd feel i was all alone in my boat. I may have contradicted myself since in the beginning i said we were all the same and while it helps us get better, it isn't fair adding pressure to the heroes. Then spoke of how each day in my math class i'd read a new quote from a philosopher that was inspring. I then went into the good heroes and the bad ones. Bad- ones who are egotistical, good- modest one. Then concluded with saying the modest one know the fact of life. Which is you need to know people and guidance from others to make you succeed, it can't be done all by yourself.

so there was another essay prompt about heroes?

I also had the happiness topic, but I used very different examples haha. I used Nineteen Minutes, LBJ's "Great Society," and Elie Wiesel. Don't ask me how because I don't believe they meshed well together. I couldn't really think of what to use.

I used FDR and Ruth McBride from Color of Water. I think I went off topic on the FDR example

I used MLK and Frank McCourt from Angela's Ashes... would those examples work?

I don't think they actually care what examples you use, so long as you tie them to your thesis somehow. They're more concerned about your writing style.

wait, what exactly was the prompt for the
happiness essay??.. i think i might have
not answered the essay correctly..

It was, "is it better to focus on the happiness of others, or the happiness of yourself, in order to be happy?" <- something like that

I used Ebeneizer Scrooge (from that Christmas book!) and my uncle's work in the Peace Corps as examples. :)

i used the civil war.

It was, "is it better to focus on the happiness of others, or the happiness of yourself, in order to be happy?" <- something like that

ahh thx, well i used WWII, and Civil Rights Movement..
i just bsed everything ^^

I used The Fountainhead and Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie was a bit ambiguous though...
