Junior English!

I've heard so many horror stories about Junior English- English III AP. How the heck do I prepare for it? I heard we have a lot of timed writings, and the scores are so bad they we get 20 point curves. I'm literally freaking out. Can someone please offer me advice as to how I can prepare for this upcoming course? More reading? Writing more? Please HELP!! Thanks! :)

First, calm down. If you psych yourself out over the course, you’ll just do worse. At my school, US History has a reputation for being awful, but if you don’t freak out about the course and don’t blow it off, you’ll do fine.

Similarly, if the course is that difficult, you’ll be well prepared for college writing. Receiving a mediocre grade now but learning how to write is better than coasting through the course now and entering college with no real idea of what is expected.

When you read, think about what you’re reading - put aside more time for this course than you would for others. The more you’ve thought about what’s going on, the easier timed writing is, since you’d need less time to collect and organize your thoughts. The amount of required reading may be a challenge if it’s high, so keep that in mind.

If it would comfort you some, pick up one of the books in this thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/743246-how-many-classics-do-you-read-english-literature.html</a>) and practice some - read at a decent pace, think it through, see what you might discuss in class, then write about it. You might see if it applies to any of the older online free-response questions from the AP English Language or AP English Lit exams. Try answering the question as well as you can in a time limit similar to what you’d have on a test. Then read it over and see where it needs improvement. Have a parent read it over and see what they think. Best of luck!

Will there be any problems if I take AP Lit before AP Language? The language course for juniors is full, so I really don’t have a choice anyway. What’s the major diff? Is the language course full of writing and lit course full of reading? (( I already looked at the college board website ))

Don’t know about Lit, but Lang is EASY. Seriously, you can BS your way through (if you’re that type of person). This is the absolute easiest class to BS in. No need to read the required books, just use Sparknotes. On the timed writings, just throw in big words and make it sound professional. That’s it. Simple.

Are you in college yet? And what score did you get on the exam?
Is AP Lang. very useful in college? esp. 'cuz it does have the timed writing

I think I can BS stuff, but the all the junior English teachers are no non-sense. They strictly disallow Sparknotes, and many people have gotten in a lot of trouble because of references to Sparknotes material. And they’re pretty smart people, but the teachers are very anti-Sparknotes.

^ Use a combination of Sparknotes, Cliffsnotes, Wikipedia, and Yahoo Answers :stuck_out_tongue:
And I found English Lang helpful for the SAT (reading strategies) so that’s one benefit
