junior-no extacurriculars/volunteer hours, but i have a job. can i get into college?!

hi
i'm a junior, and i go to the 2nd best school in the nation (oxford academy).
i have average grades (by the end of the semester, ill have a UC gpa of 3.4), but i have no volunteer hours. also, i'm an inactive member of only one club (GSA), and the only extra-curricular i have is a job (which i've had since march of THIS YEAR).
so far, i took 1 AP last year (failed the AP test), 4 this year (i think i passed 2, failed the other 2), and will be taking 4 next year.
OH and i didn't take my SATs yet, and my SAT subject tests dont come out until next thursday. but i'm assuming i got 600s on both subject tests (biology and history), and i think i mgiht get a 1700 on the actual SAT.

over summer, i'm thinking of eitehr doing some volunteer hours (probably around 50) ORR taking an extra class at cypress community college.

however, other than that, do you think my chances of getting into college are slim? i'll be applying to UCR (riverside), cal state san jose, cal state long beach, cal state san francisco, and cal state fullerton.

If you can get a 1700 on the regular SAT and have a UC GPA of 3.4, you’ll probably be accepted at UC Riverside as long as you don’t have any Ds or Fs on the report card.

You should be aware, however, that the Cal States have a new policy this year that will limit you to being accepted only to the closest Cal State to you that offers the major that you want to go into. This is so they can accommodate the maximum students possible while doing better estimates of applicate numbers (and so they can determine who should be rejected this year–the first year when they will have to do a lot of rejections of those who meet the required grade point averages).

Therefore, I can tell you that you will definitely be accepted at the Cal State that is closest to you as long as you apply on-time. However, if your major isn’t offered at that school, then you can make an argument for one of the other Cal States based upon that criteria, but then your odds of acceptance will be very slightly lowered.

P.S. One other great school that you could consider (although it is out-of-state) is Oregon. It will cost you (and your parents) just a bit more, but if your unweighted GPA is above 3.25, you can essentially get automatic admittance–and even if you don’t have this, you still are likely to be accepted. They have very good business and education schools. Also, consider UC Santa Cruz if you want to major in biology–it’s their specialty, and you could probably get admitted there also (although it is not guaranteed like UC Riverside). Personally, being that you went to Oxford Academy, I’d be amazed if UC Santa Cruz didn’t admit you, though. Lastly, apply to UC Merced as a backup. Even if something happens and you don’t get into the others, your 3.4 UC GPA guarantees you a spot at UC Merced–and the school is brand new and beautiful (although some don’t like it because it is in the central valley).
