<p>Hi,
I am going to be a Senior this year but I had a really really really bad freshman year before I kicked my self in the behind and got my grades back to a decent level Sophmore-Junior year.My overall GPA at the end of Junior is a 2.9. I am currently in summer school for a D I got in Geometry and I have an A in the summer class right now, and I really expect to keep it. I've taken the SAT twice so far and got a 1700 and a 1850, but I plan to take it one last time (fingers crossed) in October. Another major problem I had was first semester junior year, I found out i was really bad at AP Physics and got a D+ in the class before I dropped it for normal Physics second semester and got a B+. I also took the SAT II in Physics advised by my counselor and got a 600 (I don't know if this is a good score or not). AP wise, I took AP Euro Sophmore year and got a B in the class and a 3 on the AP test. Junior year I took APUSH and got an A in the class and a 4 on the AP test. Extracurriculars wise, I'm in my school Marching/Concert Band as Section Leader. I passed grade 4 of Piano Theory and Practical. I'm also Varsity in my school's Badminton team. And lastly I'm secretary in my school's Chess Club. I didn't really do many Volunteer Hours, which I'm regretting now, but I'm going to sign up in the fall to volunteer in the library. Senior year, I'm taking AP Bio, AP Gov/Econ, and AP Stats, in addition to normal classes. If it might help, I'm going to give it my 110% next year to get all A's first semester (I don't know if it will help though since I'm sending applications in November). I have worked really hard to push myself to improve my very bad grades Freshman year, but I know it's no excuse for being an idiot and possibly throwing my chances at a decent college.
After all that, is it still possible for me to get into a decent UC (like Merced) or a CSU (like SJSU)?
-Thanks</p>
<p>First you need to calculate your CSU/UC GPA using this link. Freshman grades are not included and Senior grades are not considered only the rigor of your Senior year. <a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
<p>For the UC’s you need a minimum of a 3.0 UC GPA (in-state) or 3.4 (out of state) to qualify. Even though you meet the minimum GPA requirements, you would still need around a 3.4-3.6 to have a good chance at UCM. An upward trend in your grades is noteworthy so keep up the good work.</p>
<p>SJSU is very competitive depending upon your major. All CSU’s (except SLO) us the Eligibility Index (EI) to determine thresholds for acceptance. Here is the calculation: (CSU/UC GPA x 800) + (SAT Critical Reading + SAT Math).
See the link for Freshman 2014: <a href=“http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-10079.11705.html”>http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-10079.11705.html</a></p>
<p>There are many other Cal States that you would have good chances for admission. I would plug my stats into the SuperMatch feature on this website and see some of the possibilities. Sac State, San Francisco State, Fresno State, CSU Stanislaus if you want to stay in Northern California could be good choices.</p>
<p>You should still apply to any school you want, just keep in mind that you should have 2 safety schools where you are sure you can gain acceptance and that you can afford to attend. </p>
