Hey Guys I am transferring with junior standing. I NEED to get above a 3.7+ my first semester since finance recruiting starts this fall and this spring.
Right now I have the following:
CLASS 2150 - Roman Republic - George Gaffney - 3 hours
ECON 2300 - Money & Banking - Staff - 3 hours
ECON 3020 - Intermediate Macro - Hyunseung - 3 hours
SPAN 1100 - Elementary Spanish for Beginers - 5 hours
WGS 2240 - Intro to Womens Health - 3 hours (has prereqs but going to ask adviser to override them)
Total is 17 credits but doesnt seem too strenuous. Looking to start off strong. Let me know what you guys think and if you have any suggestions.
I need 1 humanities
the 1000 level writing
1 perspective
3 international studies
1 history
The Roman Republic class will probably require a fair amount of reading and writing but if you put in the work it should be pretty easy to get an A. Money & Banking, like all lower-level econ electives, shouldn’t be tough conceptually. However, the actual difficulty of the class will depend on who ends up teaching the class. I had Intermediate Macro with Saggi and it was very easy. Hyunseung seems to be a bit harder and a bit more focused on the math side of economics than Saggi was, but it still should be doable. Elementary Spanish will be easy. WGS classes are complete jokes. 17 hours will probably require a good deal of work but if you put in the hours you should have no problem getting a 3.7.
I’m sure you know this, but finance recruiting is very competitive. If you haven’t taken the basic finance courses yet (financial accounting, managerial accounting, and corporate finance) you absolutely need to if you want to be a competitive applicant. Preferably you should add a financial economics minor. You also should take math up to linear algebra and econometrics(and preferably other advanced statistics courses), as well as some programming courses. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks for the warm response. I’ve made a few adjustments to my schedule.
ECON 2300 - unknown
ECON 3020 - Saggi
MUSL 1600 - Gunderman
SPAN 1100 - Frances
FNEC 3705 - Damon (really want to take this but only 1 spot available but not sure if I’ll get it, so I’m going to put down the roman rep class just in case).
I took financial accounting, managerial account, and corp fin at my previous school, and I have prior experience working in private equity and at a F100 company. I also founded the Investment banking club at my prior school and taught myself the three basic valuation techniques as well as LBO modeling. I’ve reached out and conversed with Vandy kids working at BBs and they said I should very competitive, its just a matter of working my tail off.
Thanks again for the help. I’ll probably see you on campus!
FNEC 3705 won’t help with your fall interviews because they will happen in September this year (GS, BAML, etc). They used to recommend you take it fall semester junior year because the interviews used to happen in the spring semester
Got it. Still think it would be an interesting class but I’ll probably end up not taking it. Any other recommendations for an (easier) class that could be an alternative to Roman Republic? Just want to mitigate the risk of it taking up a ton of my time since I’ll be busy with recruitment as well.
@ofocke17 That’s an impressive resume. You’ll definitely be competitive. I’d still take FNEC 3705 if you manage to get in. It won’t help you very much for September interviews, but it will still look good on your resume and help you with future interviews. If you just need an easy class to fill up hours take general logic in the philosophy department. There is literally no work outside of class. It is a MNS class you it probably won’t help you with the AXLE requirements but it is a guaranteed A. For your 1000 level writing class Intro to Philosophy is easy assuming you take it with the right grad student.
I graduated last year so I won’t get to see you on campus but good luck. For kids who want to go into finance junior year it is definitely very busy, especially if you are involved in Greek Life, club sports, etc. You seem to know a lot about the process and should do well. If you have any other questions please ask.
Is it common for houses to take juniors/junior transfers? I’ve always thought it was pretty rare unless the guy knew lots of the brothers
@ofocke17 I agree with vandy93 I think you should take the class at some point even if it won’t help with the for the fall interviews. I just wanted to let you know because I thought it would help with the interviews but apparently it doesn’t because of how far forward the interviews/recruiting keep getting pushed. If you do take it in the fall it will help with your interviews in the winter/spring though
Also there used to be a Vandy easy A tumblr but I think it’s gone now. If you don’t care about getting axle credit take the intro HOD class. I think the HOD stats class or the lowest level math stats are also easy. “Baby bio” (the bio class before 1500) is apparently really easy as well
@suffer It’s not common for houses to take juniors for obvious reasons. Another consideration with transfers is that it is not possible to be apart of more than one fraternity. So say if someone transferred to Vandy and was a DU at their old school, they would not be able to join a chapter here unless they got a release from nationals.
At Vandy most people already have their friend groups early on. As a junior transfer it will be hard to break into the social scene. It would be much easier for a junior transfer to adjust socially if they joined a fraternity or another club with a large social component(like the rugby team or another club sport). It shouldn’t be that hard for a junior transfer to get a bid at some houses(Pike, DTD, etc.), even if they didn’t know any brothers.
@ofocke17 I’d recommend doing that. They’ll definitely let you join their chapter. Pike recently recolonized at Vandy, so they don’t have a house, but you’ll have a group of guys to go out with, etc.
