Ok so i just transferred high schools and im going into my Junior Year. Now i havent been in aps my past two year...and now im takin 3 aps this yr.....My clubs and sport record is pretty great and my gpas good as well....i aiming for a really top college such as the ivys...Ok so heres the problem im takin ap us history, ap composition, and ap psychology this year along with regular chemistry......i really want to take ap biology but my guidance counselor says i need to take chem before i can take ap bio.....however, many of my friends mentioned that they took ap bio with chem concurrently.....My guidance counselor says id be better off saving ap bio for my senior year and it doesnt matter to colleges what year you take a class as long as you take it.....I am really dedicated to getting into a top school such as an columbia and i heard that my junior year is my most important year ever.....I feel that if I dont take ap bio this year colleges will down upon me because they will only see the first semester of my senior year grades when i apply so if i take ap bio my senior year they wont know if did well in it or not before they make their decision to accept me or not...but if i get an A in ap bio my junior year it will look much better.........Bio is my favorite subject and prospective major and I plan to go med school so that is why I am looking into this greatly...If i get advice from the posts here to take ap bio my junior year i will have to convince my guidance counselor to let me do it because they dont giv in easily to student demands.....Basically my question is does it matter which year i take ap bio and will it be worse if I decide or have to take it my senior year rather than my junior?

If you are up to it, take chem and bio this year.

If you are going for a science major, this will show dedication and passion for science. My junior year, I was debating between chem and physics. I ended up taking both (considered suicide at my school), and it’s one of the reasons I got into California Institute of Technology.

I agree with Vickyt09. If science is your best subject, it would definitely be nice to take an SAT II in bio. That’s my suggestion, even though I did not decide to do it. I chose to take drawing and ceramics instead of doubling up because I absolutely love art and was unwilling to drop it. Doubling up is a great idea, but I wouldn’t do it if you have something really good to fill in that period.

If you can switch , you should consider taking AP Bio instead of the AP Psychology. AP Bio is considered a “core” AP science class, where as AP Psych is considered more of a “lightweight” AP, especially for someone interested in a Bio /premed interest. However, by trying to take 4 AP classes after none in your prior years, you may be asking for trouble with your GPA. Have you already taken a Chem class in HS? If not, you probably don’t want to jump right into AP Chem! That may be the reason for your counselors advise. You want to be able to show you can do really well in AP classes, not just that you took a lot of them.

I am not trying to take Ap chem just regular chem along with Ap bio

Well, to really answer your question (since I didn’t really the first time): Take bio this year, at all costs. If your major is bio, you want those AP bio and SAT II test results in your college app.

If you -have- to take chem with bio, you might as well take AP chem. It’s not that much more work. Even if you don’t end up taking the AP test, a Chem SAT II looks good too. Your focus is bio anyway, so you don’t have to get perfect test scores for chem, just decent ones.
