Jury Duty for Out of State student

Son goes to college in NC. We live in NJ.
He just got a notice for petite jury duty for October. He is going to call tomorrow to see what can be done but according to the the Jury duty questionnaire , being a college student out of state is not a valid excuse to be excused.

At best I think it may have to be rescheduled for the Christmas holidays ( 2 weeks) or else next May/June.

Anybody else go through this?

My older son who goes to school in-state was summoned the same exact day.

Both our Ds called and got rescheduled to a break time (in their case, Christmas break).

D just got called for october sometime. She returned the notice saying she couldn’t serve because of school. they re-scheduled her for April —when she is still in school!

She’s just not gonna deal with it for now…

In CT, S had to reschedule for a time he was home. I think he did it last August before he went back to school. Like in NJ, being a college student is not a valid reason to be exempted from jury duty.

My kids registered to vote in their college town. When called by home state for jury duty, the form had a box for- registered voter in another state.

I actually started this thread not too long ago. You can read the responses here too: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/1189778-jury-duty.html

It’s another one of those never-ending issues that college students have to deal with.

I think the consensus is to explain you are a college student, but would be happy to serve ____________ (fill in the blank as to when you are back home and could be expected to comply). As others have said, there’s often a place on the form to provide your explanation as to why you can’t serve at that time. You won’t get an exemption, just a reassignment to another time, which is the way it should be.

My D spent most of her summers away from home when she was an out-of-state student. She was registered to vote in that state. We were told if she could demonstrate she was registered to vote there or provide a utility bill that she would be taken off the list. It took a bit of doing, but she was removed. She was never called to serve in the other state. I think our state summons people more frequently than other states do. The second she reregistered to vote in our state, she was summoned.

Older son was summoned by the state where he went to college because he was a registered voter in that state. The summons was forwarded by the college after he graduated, so he was exempted because he was no longer a resident of that state.
A couple of weeks later, he was summoned by our home state where he had his drivers license, but had never registered to vote. He was exempted because by then he had left for grad school and was no longer a resident of the state.
In almost 3 years, he’s never been summoned in the state he now lives, although he is both registered to vote there & has a drivers license there.

My son was called for jury duty when he was in school. He couldn’t make it on the assigned dates but the laws allowed him to reschedule it within that same calendar year. So he was able to reschedule it for summertime. Being a college student is not a reason to be excussed, as it should not be.
