Just a few things

On the section of the Common App where Princeton wants to know “just a few things,” like favorite recording and favorite keepsake, are we supposed to explain the reasoning behind our choices, or just list them? For example, my favorite word is palimpsest and I want to be able to describe the metaphorical meaning behind my choice, because literally it wouldn’t be that interesting to a reader unless they understand it in a literary sense. I wasn’t sure, even if there was space to add more words, if they were looking for that type of thing.

Accepted SCEA applicant here, it really depends. For some of them I went into detail (favorite keepsake/memento) but for others (favorite book) I just put the title. Honestly not sure how much bearing the short answers have on admission, I think they just want to get a feel for who you are

@luvquizbowl my son (Class of 2020) did the same as @NotIvyYet, he mostly answered the questions with a simple response, but on a few he added a short explanation that helped reveal his personality / character. I think if your response makes is memorable, it can really help you standout.

Okay, great! Thank you both!
