Just chance me... please, no flaming.

So, I'm an Asian female applying for colleges this summer/fall-ish time (I don't have a green card, so I'm still considered international even though I've been in the States for almost 8 years). Although my stats are really good and my transcript looks pretty nice, my ECs and leadership look a little shabby. I have an excuse (but probably not a very good one) for this lack--I attended three different high schools, each in a different state, during my first three years. Thus, I didn't have enough time to start doing ECs/volunteer work quickly. I've ask admissions officers, and they told me to mention that on my application.

Overall, I'm not worried about the academics portion of my application, only the EC/volunteering/leadership part.

But... enough excuses, here are my stats.

--Scores/Transcript--

GPA (Unweighted) - 4.00
Class Rank- 1 / 632
SAT score- 2400
ACT score (w/o writing) - 36

SAT Sub: Math II (800), Bio-E (770), History (760), expecting okay/decent scores in Chem and Phys
AP's: Calc BC (5), Stats (5), Bio (5), APUSH (5), expecting decent scores in Chem, Phys C: Mech, and English Lang

Things on transcript that may stand out (hopefully)- Calc BC taken freshman year... 3 dual-enrolled math/stats classes in sophomore year (multivariable calc, linear algebra, and a calculus-based stats course)... 2 dual-enrolled in junior year (ordinary diff. equations, world history)--all A's. And... lastly, 5 years of French (including AP French senior year)

So... yeah... that's pretty much it. I would really appreciate it if you chance me... I've never posted a thread on the chance forum before. Please be honest.

Here's my list of schools... A lot of ivies, I know, but many state colleges/non-ivies don't offer enough scholarships to internationals. grumble I'm going to narrow this list down soon... but just chance me on the ones you want. crosses fingers

Universities that I really, really want to attend (even if I have to take a loan)
Princeton University (my ultimate goal)
Harvard University
Stanford University
Yale University
California Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Universities that I would like to attend if I get enough scholarships
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
John Hopkins University
Washington University in St. Louis (think I'll get merit-based scholarships?)
University of Chicago (think I'll get merit-based scholarships?)

Before you write anything, I just wanted to say thanks. :) Hopefully, this post wasn't too long... but then again, all of these chance threads are pretty long and so many of them have incredible ECs sigh.

Sigh, this post was WAY too long... must start making it shorter...

you are good... a little too good lol

7 or 8 clubs? isn't bad... especially when u do them for mutiple years. u also are president and captain and stuff... really good......

but some ppl on this site will tell u that because u look so 'perfect" w/ SAT and ACT... u might get rejected to some IVIES... but i think UPEnn will take u as well as MIT and Cal tech.

stanford has a lot of asians.... but u look like u are more "involved" than most asians that i know...... book smart.... but no participation in anything

Well, no... I didn't do those clubs for multiple years. Since I switched schools several times, I only did some clubs for one year. I mean, I've been in 7 or 8 different clubs, but I haven't been able to stay in any for a long period of time (except for Anime Club... but... heh heh).

x( That's kinda silly that Ivies would do that. But... UPenn is still nice, since I'm interested in Business.

Haha... book smart. Well, I might actually be more in that category than well-rounded.

I'm totally lopsided. Yesh.

math team 4 two years is good..... 4 me..... i have moved around schools as well.. zero ECs freshman year..... 1 sophmore year... 5 junior year and i will have the same 5... senior year (this is not including sports, which is 4 three years... and community service (2-3 years), or youth leadership (2 years))

do u have any continuous community stuff?

a girl from my school got into harvard.... president of beta club.... maybe 1 other leadership...caucasian... no sports.. lower than a 2250 SAT.. i'd guess probably 2100s, and she was ranked somewhere from 15-40 out of 310.

haha my school math club president is like... don't even think about it if you haven't made USAMO since like 9th grade
but then my school also have perfect AMC's every year
52nd in Michigan isn't that great, i mean i slack off on the Mandelbrot and still got tied for 45th in western part of US. so write some other stuff

if you have a green card, then you should have a very good chance at all those school, BUT you don't, so you'll be competing with all the people in the world basically

what did you get on AIME and AMC? MIT cares about that!

:/ I didn't get perfects on the AMC and AIME. Looks like I'm screwed, since I didn't get into USAMO either.

Oh well, looks like I'll just attend some bad university... Sigh, stupid green card...

no silly! you don't need perfects on anything

just high score is a plus for the tech schools, but you don't NEED it
by high i mean about 130+ on AMC
and 6+ on AIME
and USAMO.. i haven't made it either, got into AIME since 8th grade... never passed it ( soo mad at myself >.< haha, but then only about 100 in the country will have made AIME since 8th grade. so hope that helps)

I am Asian too! moved here in 6th grade! except my Chinese and English sucks now >.<

how far is your green card? try to make them pass it faster?
my mom had to write lots of letters to them. we had to wait 2+ years for the last step, even longer if my mom didn't kept writing letters to them!

Yeah... I've gotten those before... wait... 130+ on AMC 10 or 12? I've gotten 130+ on AMC 10.

Ah.. coolios. Yay! Chinese peeps unite. I am still fluent.. but I can't write. T.T I wish I could.

I'm a bit like you (asian, speaks fluently french,...) and even more screwed up than you are. I just went to the US and the administration at my school messed up my transcript and GPA, forbid me to take AP classes => I have to do a bunch of independent study.
The moral is that you shouldn't depressed, your are 10^26 more likely to get into a prestigious university (The Ivies are a bit hard, but I bet Washington U., even MIT or Caltech will accept you easily) than I am (I don't even qualify for my state school!)

So have courage because your situation is extremely good, and I think you have a 50% or even more to get into MIT/Caltech (Harvard weigth a lot on ECs so I have no idea about your chances there)
Do you speak fluently a few other languages? That might be a plus.

Nope... I'm only trilangual. Chinese, French, and English. x)

i disagree with Ky-anh Tran
you can never be sure with MIT/Caltech
they look at a lot on math/science related ECs
and they know that math club/science club isn't that much
like most of the people that apply there have math club and science club, you need more competitions and maybe internship? for MIT and caltech
and being international.. no one can have 50% + cuz for MIT international acceptance rate is 4%!!!

just do your best on the APPS!
posting on the chance forum won't increase your chances. the outcomes aren't gonna make a difference whether or not you know your "chance"that random people like us made up. and most people here ( me included haha ) don't really know what they are talking about anyways, i mean we are not the adcom .so yeah!
best of luck!

i need LOTS of work on SAT
lol (soo un Asian of me to have bad SAT 1 score lol!)

In response to a post about 52nd on the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition not being "that great:"

I understand the basis for this reasoning, since the person who posted this said they slacked off and still got 45th in the midwest on the Mandelbrot. But the poster misses the point that in comparison to the number of people who take the MMPC, very few people within Michigan take the Mandelbrot. As the OP said, about 10,000 students in MI take the MMPC; many of these students are talented mathematically but may not attend schools where contests like the AMC, AIME, or Mandelbrot are well-known or sponsored. However, the MMPC is well-publicized, and is taken by most students who have a chance of doing well on the competition. 52nd in MI, especially freshman year, is extremely impressive.

As a side note, one person in Michigan who didn't even place in the top 10 this year on the MMPC has made it to MOP in years past. Numerous other sub-10s also qualified for USAMO. Yeah, Michigan is that competitive.

Yeah, I qualified for USAMO twice, missing blue MOP by 1 point this year, and I still placed 12th....well, technically tied with 11th, but I'm still mad. My excuse is that the graders fail :P
