just curious...

I'm in the dark when it comes to internships, landing a job, etc etc after college. (this isn't about me, i'll be heading to the Air Force Academy this June:D )

A friend of mine who goes to college at Brown is possibly majoring in Applied Economics/Math Unfortunately, he is in the middle class of people right now meaning that he has to pay a full blown 50k a year with cosigning of his parents aka taking out a lot of student loans.... He expects to go into some type of investment/finance/wall street field. He is an ok student...Brown doesn't have GPAs (3.9...3.5..and so on) instead they have letter grades and pass/fail.

I'm not entirely sure how bad the economy is right now with inflation in tuition and unemployment rates being pretty high than expected...

He keeps tellling me how he will be able to land a job literally right after college and will get picked by a top firm/company for trading, expecting the 6 figures quickly (lol...). Also, he probably wants to get his MBA too so more student loans will be very very risky. His grades are ok...not the best but they're around a C maybe even B-...

Do companies emphasize the interviews more than the grades when it comes to internships and job searching? Or are they both equally looked at? Let's say for example a recruiter is looking at 2 different people, 1 from an Ivy with okay grades vs. 1 from a nonivy with a very very high gpa, who would they pick overall?
I'm not going anywhere near finance or economics at this points because it looks like a very stressful job and those that want to major in it have to enjoy it and not do it just for the sake of $$$$$$$$ which is why i'm lost...

I'm just a little worried for him even though i shouldn't be (he was, in fact, my boyfriend hehe) just looking out for someone i still care about.

on the side note, i was accepted to Johns Hopkins University with little scholarship and also got nominated for the Air Force Academy because i would like to major in some type of engineering (computer engineering possibly?) i just decided to throw it out there bc this post seemed more concerned about someone else than myself :)

sorry if this was really long...i kinda went on a rant lol.

He is in dream land if he thinks he can secure a six figure job in investment banking with mediocre grades.

Further, it is probably a mistake to get an MBA before getting any real world experience.

And, to address the point of ivy / non-ivy, the investment banks that pay top dollar have target schools. If you go to a target school and have a good GPA, you can get an interview; if you go to a non-target school, you probably won’t be considered (except for that kid from SDSU with the sweet cover letter!). But in a field so competitive, it’s highly unlikely that someone with middle-of-the-road grades will get a high power job right out of college.

“He is in dream land if he thinks he can secure a six figure job in investment banking with mediocre grades.”

Completely agree with this statement.
