Just for fun...what woman did you write about?

hedy lamarr

Elizabeth Blackwell, first American woman doctor. I don’t think I could have been anymore clique! :)

Anita Bryant.
If anyone knows about her, laugh with me. Hahaha.
American singer, former beauty queen, loving mother, and gay rights opponent.
She had a pie thrown in her face. It’s on youtube, google it.

“I don’t hate the homosexuals. But as a mother, I must protect my children from their evil influence.”

Sperra on pg 3- That anthology idea sounds awesome! I hope that happens someday.

When does regular decision come out? I’m an ED admit.

Writing about an opponent of human rights might not be the best idea. Colleges generally want those who have good judgment. I hope you stayed away from controversial topics for the other colleges you applied to.

I wrote about Amma, the Hindu hugging saint. She’s done a lot of volunteer work.

I got mine earlier this week.

Shay, I think your idea is a really cool one  I obviously had to look her up the second I read your post!

MedSchHopeful…Considering your username, I had to smile when I saw who you wrote about. Gotta admire you for being so confident in knowing what you want to do!

rahmemanuel- Oh, I know my subject is not somebody to be admired. I’m president of the GSA at my school, and to be frank, I think Anita Bryant’s a bigot. (but although I disagree with her actions and ideas, I didn’t insult her in my Barnard supplement.) I think I took a risk by writing about her, but ultimately writing about her helped show Barnard my passions and interests. Besides, the question merely asked us to pick a women and write about what we would talk about with her, and nothing about picking role models. : )

But you’re right! To future prospectives, you should be careful when doing things like this. In my case, Anita Bryant just worked.

I was accepted RD. : )

my second pick was mulan. (technically, she falls into “history” P: ) who else was thinking of disney characters?

thanks trapeze! And your pick was so interesting! I knew nothing about Queen Nefertit before I wiki’d her; how unusual and unique.

Sup fellow GSA’er!
Sorry about that misunderstanding, I got the Barnard woman question mixed up with a local scholarship question which is the one that asks for a woman we admire. I’ve been doing wayyyy too many essays lately.
And Mulan is awesome for her gender-bending ways.

I’m still very much enjoying this thread. It makes me want to talk to all of you and all the people you all wrote about.
McClintock is amazing, I also wish I could have a conversation with her.
Adler is a great choice.(Have you by any chance read the Laurie King Mary Russel series renee? If you like light mysteries and aren’t opposed to a different take on Holmes it’s amusing.)
I love the witch from Into the Woods. My school just did the show this year.
And I’d never heard of Amma, but I looked her up and have to go share this with my mother. Amma is her middle name.

Hey! Day of Silence is coming up, does your GSA participate? : )
No worries. It has been a while since any of us looked at the Barnard supplement.
Yes, that’s exactly why I love her. : )

Sperra-
I agree with you- those jumped out at me too. McClintock is amazing, my AP bio class just learned about her. And for some reason Irene Adler never even crossed my mind, but if I could do it again I might’ve just written about her, she seems perfect for the supplement. Haha.
It’s too bad you won’t be joining Barnard 2015. I’ve also experienced the woes of financial aid. : P

Haha, my school also did Into the Woods (full version) this year, and we actually did Mulan Jr. last year.

We also participate in the Day of Silence every year, as well as Sea of Pink.

What’s really amazing about this thread is the shear diversity of the kind of women everyone has written about. I mean, Queen Nefertiti and Luna Lovegood? It’s absolutely wonderful.

@rebeccar I did Nany Drew as well! (I applied ED though and can’t wait for the fall!).

Man, I am loving all the Harry Potter essays. It makes me even more excited for school!

I wrote about Thecla from the Acts of Paul and Thecla, which is a book that was once intended for the Bible but dumped over time.

She’s not known, but I thought the few things she supposedly did were absolutely amazing. She was like a religious feminist (and possibly unintentionally). My mom was so annoyed by my choice (she was convinced it would kill my app), but it worked well enough!

Ohmygosh, I cannot WAIT to meet you all on campus! You all sound very thoughtful. :D
