Anyone else having the problem that nothing you do for pleasure brings "balance" to your life?

I do!!! I mean i have thousands of ways to enjoy myself but it;s really stupid and really cant say it to a school like MIT - such as : i sleep, i watch movies, I chat with friends,... oh my, but it's not something special...

yeah... I don't know, I kind of like the question because it gives people with some non-academic interest they're really into a chance to talk about it without feeling like they have to have won awards. But for those of us whose interests honestly line up pretty nicely with other stuff on the application, it just feels like MIT's saying "You'd better not really do math for the pleasure of it--that's an indication of an unbalanced life!"

I think it's an awesome question. I wrote about Handbells (because ringing bells is awesome). Everyone does lots of things outside of school/award-y stuff anyway....

I put chess down; I like to play for fun, even though I suck. :)

Live steam model railroading.
My friends look at me kinda wierd when they see me downloading locomotive builder specs during lunchtime.

Memorizing as many digits of Pi as you can!

mmm....
Pie.....

"Memorizing as many digits of Pi as you can!"

I only know 8 off hand. Beyond that it's kinda impractical. :)

Memorize powers of two, that one is a bit more fun. I only know up to 2^16 or so though. :(

I am now at 200 digits. Do not forget Pi Day!

I have a dilemma on this one. As it stands now, I wrote about how I like to play pickup basketball. However, I would really like to change it to poker, since that's one thing I truly have a passion for. But I'm not sure how MIT would look at that. I did mention it in my interview, and know that MIT has a poker club, but if I talked about my it in my mini-essay I don't know how they would view underage gambling, since that would be implied. Am I better off just leaving it with basketball, or should I take the risk and put down poker?

I second memorizing digits of Pi! I'm up to 230+ digits, working on more.

I also love Sudoku. Can't get enough of it.

creating hiquality backing tracks / karaoke versions of popular songs.

i wrote about making webpage layouts. yay html skills

ECEngineer, I would put down poker.

Seriously, put what you're happy about.

I remember reading (though I can't recall whose blog I read it on) that somebody's favorite applicant wrote down "daydreaming" in response to that question. And he/she got in.

"I remember reading (though I can't recall whose blog I read it on) that somebody's favorite applicant wrote down "daydreaming" in response to that question. And he/she got in."

It was not in response to that question. The applicant listed it as his/her #1 extracurricular activity. And it was in Ben's blog.

1200 digits. :). Although that is not what I put in response to that question.

I have, uh, social escapades. You all can ask for more details after the deadline. :)
