I'm one of those who reported here about conversations I had with USC admissions about legacies. I was told that legacy does not factor into admissions. The reason they ask for legacy status is because if the legacy is not admitted, they offer a private meeting with an advisor to discuss transferring at a later date.

There is no link to this information because it is subjective information. It is possibly, as someone stated above, that legacy status could put a candidate over another if all other factors are the same.

The only other proof I have of this is from my personal experience. I am a USC alum, S1 is a USC alum, and S2 attends USC now. I am also involved with different organizations at USC and volunteer there regularly. D had higher than mean test scores, just under mean GPA, all classes were honors or AP, and substantial leadership and ec's. She did not get in- thus my interest in this subject. We attribute her rejection to the fact that she was applying to Marshall only and her GPA needed to be higher. Legacy was not enough to make up for that.

Thank you so much for this. I got a status update on 3/11 after it had been 12/1 forever and have been running to the mailbox every day. You've given me a little hope. I just can't stand it.

Legacy counts. Does it get you in? No. Legacies count for transfers. Legacy counts for admission. Will you get in with a legacy and a 2.2 gpa from a poorly regarded or unknown high school? No. Will you be able to have a conference about transfering with criteria? Yes.

Why do you think that we call it the Trojan FAMILY? Good families help each other out: in job searches, in admission, and in social environments.

Adcoms are far from being exemplars of straightforwardness and transparency, and their lack of these qualities is nowhere more evident than in disclosing preferences given to various groups for admission. Be it full pay vs. FA, urms, orms, athletes, development cases or legacies, they obfuscate when they can, and lie when they must.

IMO, you just cannot trust anything an Adcom says about group preferences, save perhaps to consider the opposite of what they claim to be likely true. Look instead to what they do, in the case of legacy preference, look for examples of legacies, at CC, CollegeData, etc, that are admitted with GPA and SAT that would make admission unlikely.

My S is a legacy at two competitive schools, and from my perusal of such sites, one finds some examples of legacies, like your D, inexplicably denied admission, but many more examples of legacies who obviously would never have been admitted except for their legacy.

the wait is excruciatingly painful. i'm from new jersey, so i thought naturally it'd take longer for acceptances to get here since it's by mail, but then a week ago i found a guy from my school got in. and on of my friends also got in as well...

i mean, i've already gotten into 8 schools and ucla a couple days ago, but i just really really want to know about usc right now!!!

So, it's March 20th now. I still haven't received notice from USC admissions. Tomorrow, March 21st, is the last mailing day of the week. Does this mean that I probably didn't get in? Can someone clarify that the counselor said "most of the acceptance letters will be sent out this week and next week"? I know I'm paranoid and it has already been said, but it seems unlikely that I will receive an acceptance letter RIGHT before the deadline... I hate this! :(

I know exactly how you guys feel. The wait is actually painful. What's worst, I'm not going to be here monday - wednesday of next week and i won't be able to enjoy myself while I'm out of town because all I'm going to be able to think about is whether or not i have a big fat admissions letter waiting in my mailbox. I'm pretty sure my cell phone won't work up there and internet is pretty much over so yeah, I'm gonna be a nervous WRECK. Somebody pray for me lol.

cc411, that's interesting that your daughter wasn't excepted to Marshall. I consider my statistics to borderline as well so I'm kind of curious about what kind of stats she had. Is there anyway you could pm them to me, or just post them?

Omg you guys, everyone on that USC stats thread that mentioned the statuses marked right before they received their acceptances all had like two status updates within five days of their receiving the acceptance letter! Mine hasn't changed from March 05, 2009... omfg that means they rejected me then... what the hell. I thought they said status doesn't mean anything. Every single person had a status change right before they got it in the mail.

I am applying for Theatre BA/BFA as well. :/ I haven't gotten anything but a "Thank You Note" from my auditor, which I believe everyone gets one. Did you get one, Ganwokakeru?

Ganwokakeru, same here. Pretty sure I'll be going to my #2 choice. Which is almost as good as my #1, but it'd be kind of cool to say I got into every school I applied to.

Hey everyone, I'm Heather from St Louis. I'm planning on majoring in theatre, and I still have not gotten any letters from USC. I'm sooo nervous!! I think I'm well qualified, but my ACT socre is only a 26....my english and reading scores are both 30 and 31, but my math and science are 20 and 21 : / In my opinion I don't need math or science for theatre, but that's just my opinion. What do you think? My extra curriculars are out of my ass pretty much and same with community service...I had two alumni (one of which is on the alumni board) wrote me reccomendations and my essay was pretty goood. USC is my number 1, and I'd do nything to get in. Anyone's opinion would be great!
