Saw this post after reading about it on Barnard. Rape on campus
Roger Canaff: Elizabeth Seeberg Could Not Have Done More

I heard about this yesterday,it is very, very sad. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for her family.

setting a bookmark.

Here are links to the story as reported by the ND Observer. Some of the information in the Chicago Tribune article was misleading, IMO. Also, just a caution. Everything that I have read in relation to this sad event has used the term sexual assault; I have not seen the word rape used except by the OP of this thread.

How horrific. Her family is in my prayers

First off, this is not a confirmed rape. It is a reported sex assault by a mentally unstable female (unstable BEFORE the alleged sex assault) who committed suicide. None of the allegations made have been verified nor has any credible evidence been presented otherwise there would be probable cause for an arrest. I am not trivializing her death, just not jumping to conclusions without evidence.

I agree with jsmithers. This is a terrible tragedy and I do think that NDSP should have put a report in much more quickly. However, to say that someone should be kicked off the football team for something they allegedly did is not right (especially since the evidence seems a bit thin right now). A lot of people are saying “innocent until proven guilty” doesn’t apply to football because playing football is not a right. However, how is it fair to destroy someone’s reputation and possibly do serious harm to their future career prospects because of something they MIGHT have done?

Let the legal process run its course. If he’s guilty, he deserves to be severely punished for what he did. If he’s not, then his career and reputation won’t have been ruined over something he didn’t do.

As the father of a freshman student this year - I can’t tell you how hard it has hit home with the incidents involving Declan and Liz. As a parent I have profound sadness for them and their families and can not imagine the incredible loss and heartache both families have now. I hope and pray that this beloved University will do everything in it’s power to stand up and hold accountable for any mistakes that may have been made in the tremendous loss beset on this campus. My faith tells me it will.
