Anyone know if the IFC is continuing the social moratorium? I haven’t seen anywhere and the sun’s website is down…

the sun’s website has been down for like 2 days. Not only is it an awful paper (but as an alum I still read), but the clowns behind it can’t even maintain its rudimentary online version.

I looked on the chronicle too, nothing there. And the ifc website hasn’t been updated this year even.

So…?

Hey now. The reporting this semester was by far the best seen in a decade. And if you thought the Sun could have been better, you always could have written for it.

what, exactly kills you from H1N1?

this semester has been good so far. At least the stories seem to be relevant to what is going on, unlike the “2 weeks ago…” that I got used to.

I co-edited my HS paper, and I have to say that I really respect The Sun for coming out with such timely and well-reported stories, especially with all of the H1N1 news. It’s a lot harder than it seems to get out a publication, especially a daily.

@RileyJohn: As I understand it, H1N1 isn’t very much different from the seasonal flu, unless you develop some sort of complication (pneumonia, etc).

I saw a kid with a big ol’ pack of Halls in one of my classes, and he was coughing like crazy. Not very comforting, to say the least.

The issue with H1N1 is the unknown which is what differentiates itself from seasnal flu. No one can really predict how fast this virus will mutate and the risk it may eventually present.

-Gometar, I hope I have not cause you “face-palm syndrome” whatever that may be.

Give Gomestar a few more years and he’ll be as diplomatic as CayugaRed2005. Glad to see him back on this forum again.

“The issue with H1N1 is the unknown which is what differentiates itself from seasnal flu. No one can really predict how fast this virus will mutate and the risk it may eventually present.”

The swine flu is triple reassortant, with a combination of human, avian and swine gene segments. The seasonal flu is H3N2, not H1N1. The vaccine that you probably got last year was a trivalent vaccine that did cover H1N1, but it’s ineffective against the strain we have right now. The flu can have different H and N epitopes on the surface and still be very different. One thing that you might actually want to keep in mind is that people are most infectious before they become symptomatic.

Also, not sure if this applies to the current H1N1, but if you look up past pandemics (avian and swine), you’ll probably notice that they mainly infect the lower respiratory tract, unlike the seasonal variety that affects the upper. LRT infections are usually more serious since they are harder to get rid of and they can lead to pneumonia (this explains why asthmatics are more at risk since they are usually more prone to LRT infections).

Wow fudgemaster, you have done your homework! Thanks for the explanation.

Me? Diplomatic? On an on-line forum? I think I’ve chewed you out a number of times oldfort.

That said, I recently became the President of my local Cornell Club. So I’m learning all about diplomacy.

Just some friendly exchanges.

Gomestar is not as good as you at zinging (sp?) people yet.

I think I’m gonna throw up

I hold back on zinging for the most part. I’ve been away from here for a while so I’m not cranky enough yet.

That’s what she said.

but that’s not what your mom said. ZING!!!

I am going pick up my daughter today, she is much better but still wants to come for the weekend. I asked what I could bring for suite mates and it was "Robitussin (sp-cough meds?) Advil, OJ, etc. No fun, they should be wanting Doritos and microwave pop!

Look at the bright side: Hopefully swine flu will have run its course by prelim season.
