Just how competitive has OSU gotten?

Hey guys prospective junior here. I’m just wondering to know how competitive the admission for The Ohio State University is. I spoke to a representative a while ago, and she made it out to seem like the school got very demanding and competitive in admissions and I know that that will only rise as the years go on.

Would you consider Ohio State at the level of, say, Michigan in terms of admission?

Putting things in perspective, I’m a junior with about a B average at a very very competitive and prestigious private school in New York, and the only noteworthy extracurricular I have is football (which I take very seriously). Would I have a chance (my school doesn’t rank students nor calculate GPA)?

My son just started at OSU in the CommTech Scholars program. He is from a good, not great, Long Island public school. He had a 3.5 gpa, a 1330 sat (m and V) and wasn't ranked either, but OSU admissions calculates approximate rank. I'd say he fell into the top 20% of his HS class.

Take a look at the statistics for the profile of the admitted freshmen class of 2007.

It is not yet at the level of Michigan IMO, but they are trying to get there eventually.

It is getting harder every year, but they want students from NY, so work hard prepping for your SAT/ACT, which is a very big factor for admission.

Good Luck!

nyy, I really think that as long as you do quite well on the SAT or ACT, you'll be in.

lol not even close.
If you cant get into college go to state (and ohio state) <clap clap="">

If you cant get into college and you really want some knowledge

Well, it's certainly much more competitive than any other state school in Ohio. That doesn't mean it's anywhere close to U of Mich. As someone said, they'd like to be there one day. At this point, though, they definitely are not. That's not to say they're a bad school, but not all that "competitive."

There are several data sets to look at.

Honors/u Minimum 30 ACT, top 10% of class

Scholars/u 27-29 ACT, top 20%

And the general population:

Ohio State's first-year class of 6,110 students (Columbus campus), recruited from more than 22,000 applicants, is the best academically prepared and most talented in the university's history, maintaining a trend that began 12 years ago. The average ACT score for the class was 27 and the average SAT score was 1220. Fifty-three percent were in the top 10 percent of their graduating class and 89 percent were in the top 25 percent of their class.

I think it's safe to say the days of "If you graduate from an Ohio high school, you can attend," which was the policy of the past, are gone.

It wasn't even the general policy of the past. It was the mandate of one particular governor who held office throughout the sixties and seventies and held very populist, anti-intellectual views towards higher education.

Today, I'd say that Ohio State has caught up with Illinois for admissions selectivity and, if growth rates continue, will probably be in the range of Wisconsin within the next several years.

This year 52% of applicants were accepted. 53% came from the top 10% of their high school class, and the middle 50% ACT range was 26-30. There's still a distinct gap between Ohio State and Michigan, but it's nowhere near as large or as fundamental a gap as the above immature poster would like to believe.
