Just need general help. 19 year old trying to start college with an LD

I am posting this for my boyfriend. He is 19 and starting college this year at our local community college. He has been out of high school for a full year and has never taken school seriously, but now really wants to do well. He failed a year of high school and then ended up dropping out and getting his GED, but has now decided to go back because he has grown up a bit and realized that education is important.

However, he may have an undiagnosed learning disability. We aren't sure what it is or where to go to get any information, which is why I am posting on here. He has mild dyslexia, but has never been tested for anything else and has never had special accomodations for the dyslexia.

He has a really hard time writing and can never keep his ideas straight. He has a hard time processing information when people talk and often asks people to repeat in different ways. But, when you show him how to do something one time, he remembers it and masters it almost instantly. He has a hard time reading, probably because of the dyslexia. He has a hard time with math, and specifically with fractions. He just generally wants to do well, but has a really hard time making things happen academically.

I know that was a bit of rambleing on my part, but we just need advice. He is completely on his own (his parents were physically and mentally abusive and he moved out on his own at 15) and therefore has very little to absolutely no money to help him seek assments or treatment.

Thanks everyone!

One place to start would be his college. They should have a disabilities office and the staff there may be able to recommend how to get started. There are also many online LD resources that may offer some guidance to your boyfriend–ldonline is one. Best of luck to him.
