Does anyone know the selectivity of these programs and the selection process involved, how competitive is it?

Have you heard of anyone not getting into ANY focus programs?

Is this admission as competitve as getting admitted to Duke?

and… any other general focus discussion!

woah, ,my impression is that those 3 are the most competitive ones....

awww.......

well, those are the only ones that interested me

I heard that the most competitive one was the Genome one and it wasnt really worth it

is it okie to tell me how long is ur essay ???
sorry, i am still struggling with my essay...
if i write too short, they will say that i lack dedications...
if i write too long, will they be annoyed by my babbling???

I had 3 paragraphs
1 talking about carreer goals and why
1 talking about my first choice
1 talking about my two second choices

they say they want one or two paragraphs

for EACH choice. You can confirm this with bluestar. It IS essentially an essay just like any other. THink about it...this is a selective program judged solely on these essays. My essay was pretty long...like common essay long.

i don't think they want long essays... unless maybe you're going for competitive programs... otherwise it's just too much for them to read. I think they just wanted to see that you really wanted to do the program.

Well I wouldn't really describe the program as selective. I believe an adcom stated that 85% of the people who applied for FOCUS were selected.

" believe an adcom stated that 85% of the people who applied for FOCUS were selected."

I asked on the Duke admitted students website what the selectivity was and this is what I was told. But then again you have to remeber that its not 85% among the general population of applicants. It is 85% amongst applicants who were admitted. That raises the bar a lot.

I suspect a lot of that selectivity is due to tons of people going for the human genomics focus

Good point sempitern555. Certain programs, such as the Genome Revolution and Power of Ideas, are more competitive to get into than others.
