Just talked to Admissions...ARGHHH!

I just spoke with Admissions to try and get a handle on when notices will be posted for Civil Engineering. The woman said that the computer system takes each application and assigns it a score or ranking based on all the criteria (GPA, Scores, EC’s,Work). Then based on that ranking it is sent to the appropriate college for review. As soon as the college/school of … review the application and make a determination, they post it in the system and viola…it updates the status of your portal. This would make it seem like the longer you wait to hear…the less likely your chances. Good news is I haven’t heard anyone or maybe just one person that has been accepted…Bummer is no news for me yet :(

thanks for sharing what you learned from the Admissions Office, good info!

i thought cal poly didn’t look at EC’s or work experience. where did you enter that on your application?

At the end of your application, you’re asked how many hours each week for EC and work in the form of 0~5/5~10/11~15/. That’s it so EC and work only carry small weight comparing w/ GPA and test score.

^ That’s so stupid. How easy is it to lie on that then? At least for other colleges they ask you for more information about your EC and work experience… with Cal Poly it was just a number of hours.

^ If you visit UCSD admission webpage, you can see that, out of the 11100 max points that a student can earn, only 300 are for leadership, 300 for Special talents/achievements/awards, 300 for Community and volunteer service. That’s totaling less than 10% of your max score for list 50 entries of actitivities if you wish.

How much do you think CalPoly would weight that 3 yes/no question?

EDIT - More precisely, It’s about 8.1% of EC/Volunteer for UCSD formular

I just found out that I’ve been waitlisted for Civil Engineering. :frowning: I talked to my brother who goes to Cal Poly and he thinks that because of budget cuts, engineering and architecture got hit the hardest. He thinks that almost everyone who was good enough for certain engineering majors, as well as architecture was put on the waiting list. If you really want to go there which I don’t, you should call them up and tell them this is your number 1 school. That will help a lot, because i think they only want to accept the students that they know will go there. I thought i was a shoe-in, but i guess there’s no such thing. I have yet to have heard of a Civil Engineering applicant get accepted to Cal Poly yet. Maybe me and my brother are wrong, but who knows?

I had a 4.2 weighted gpa
3.75 nonweighted
32 ACT composite
35 act math
Already got accepted to UCR and UC Irvine

^ i applied ED and got deferred, so i don’t think calling them up and stuff would actually help. I did email and talk to an admission advisor and sent him a thank you card for helping me in the application process ( i had problems with my app and classes i took abroad).
I think, i don’t even have a chance to get into civil engineering… your stats are way higher than mine =( good bye cal poly… dream school! going to be rejected twice by my number one school hahaha.

“he thinks that because of budget cuts, engineering and architecture got hit the hardest.” – why these two majors? because they are extremely impacted? i applied for architecture :[

Cal Poly IS my number one choice! I was planning to write a letter to admissions telling them that. If I call, who am I suppoed to contact?

ejmorrill, you are not a shoe-in! Your stats are much higher than many people who have been accepted.

letters won’t help. It’s all done automatically through a computer system. California state schools have too many applicants and not enough time and money to take into consideration things outside of gpa and test scores. Fair? No, life isn’t fair. You guys have amazing stats, way better than most, I wouldn’t worry about getting in, worrying at this point isn’t going to increase your chances.

when I visited the admission representative said they got letters from applicants little brothers and sisters, etc, they just pout them in the paper shredder. Maybe wait-listing is different, but i HIGHLY doubt it

good luck, just remeber that everything will work out in the end!

^ wait, what? I got waitlisted.

I hate to think about it like this, but realistically, if we have not been waitlisted or admitted by now…I’m pretty sure the chances of getting in are pretty darn low…

^ yeah me too baykid…good luck though.

o my bad for some reason I thought you got waitlisted good luck!

you guys its not even March yet. Don’t lose hope!
