I just took the GRE, and though I did better than I thought I would do, my scores were still low. I am applying to MA programs in Applied linguistics and TESOL. I will apply to more schools, but the four to whom I designated to have my scores sent for free were Pitt, Penn State, GA State and Hawaii. I got a 570V and my Q score did not break 500 (math has never been my strong point). I think I did well on the essays, but only time will tell. I am glad the test is over but am wondering if it would be worth retaking it?

For my degree, I would assume that Q scores are not as important as V scores, but do you think my score is decent enough to get into one of the above gradschools or one of the others I am considering (Queens College, IU-Chicago,)? I was going to apply to Indiana but the university requires a 600 in at least one of the sections for admissions. I don't know how strict this requirment is (I have asked...waiting for a response) but assuming it's strict, I will likely just cross it off of my list.

I would apply to some above average schools anyway, as long as you do meet the requirements. I personally wouldn't apply to a school that requires at least a 600 in one of the sections if I didn't get that. But GRE scores aren't the only factor taken into consideration when it comes to admission decisions, as you probably know. It wouldn't be a bad idea to retake it IF you have reason to believe you could do significantly better.

I'm not sure if I could do significantly better if I retake it. Indiana said that the req for a 600 is not strictly observed but the admissions lady hinted that retaking the exam would be a good idea.

Actually, about two years ago, I was doing practice tests for the GRE and my scores were VERY low and I was quite discouraged. I must say that in two years time, after taking the real test, I did improve significantly in both sections, so maybe it would be worth it to retake it and just use my winter break to do some extra prepping. My wallet won't like the extra fee though...lol.
