Just visited Carnegie Mellon University.

colleclassof2013, my word wasn’t to you. but there are too many waitlist people who are trying to mislead admitted people. thank you for your information though

Busdriver, congrats to your son for getting into the electrical engineering/computer science department at CMU. I applied to that department as well but was unfortunately waitlisted (very competitive to get in). Not many schools can surpass CMU in computer science so I think your money is being used very wisely. I actually talked to a computer engineer while visiting CMU and they work much much much harder than any other major at CMU, but since your son enjoys working very hard I think he will do just fine. Good luck to your son this coming fall.

em190, its all good, no offense taken.

Hey Busdriver11, guess what? CMU SCS acceptance rate is also 5% this year. DD and I went to the admitted student open house a few weeks ago, and during the SCS presentation, the speaker mentioned some statistics of the SCS, one of them was that there were 2600 applicants this year, they admitted 130. There were some other interesting facts as well, there were more than 150 companies came on campus to try to recruit 143 graduating seniors. 13 students went to Google and 7 went to Microsoft, and I believe that was year 2007. For year 2008, the tide seems to turn, perhaps it is because Bill Gate donated 20 million dollars for the new SCS building (slated to open this Fall), Microsoft snatched 20, Google got 8.

acceptance rate should be much higher than that. they probably said there was a class of 130 students, but that would require several hundred to be admitted. if only 130 were admitted the number who actually enrolled would be in the double digits…

Wow, either way, those are some tough odds! My son did not get into SCS, unfortunately. But he loved CMU so much he decided to do a logic and computation (basically CS theory) degree, and if he can’t transfer to CS, he’ll do a double major. He felt it would be worth the extra work. Those are some amazing job prospects. I sure hope it holds out with the economy going down the tubes, but I’d imagine a marketable degree is particularly important to get the few jobs out there. I would not want to be looking for a job right now!

That’s an 18% acceptance rate. (The freshman class is generally around 150 though.)

My son hasn’t graduated yet, but he’s got a nice summer internship at NVIDiA.

That was last year’s, though (as in, the class that is currently freshmen).

Projections are that this years will be around 15% or so.
