Kansan's Chances

whoa, 30 ACT isn't bad at all. I hate the ACT and I suck at it, but thats why I go for SAT

where do u go, freestate or something, I can't think of many kansas schools with 400+ in a grade beside, lawrence high, and freestate

I live in Kansas too! Lawrence.

And don't Olathe, Blue Valley, and Shawnee Mission all have 400+? My class is closer to 500.

hm maybe, but not the blue valley's i dont think, I got to blue valley and my class is the largest at 308

Well I thought Blue Valley was a little smaller, since they have at least twice as many high schools as Lawrence, but I didn't know it was that much smaller. Surprising.

Blue Valley has fewer students, but BV and Olathe are both growing pretty quickly. Shawnee Mission also has big classes... I think ours is close to 600.

Does it really matter whether an applicant's home state is under-represented in university admissions? It's not like the adcoms will openly discriminate against Kansans but not Oregonians while favoring Nevadans or something.

It matters- geographical diversity is always something nice and to have, and virtually all viewbooks always have the statement "students represent 48, 49, 50 blah blah states." Now, they wouldn't discriminate against a particular state, but they might give a student preferential treatment if one state is devoid of any quality applicants. Imagine a situation where all the students in one state have relatively low test scores and one has a mediocre one, well, that "mediocre' student just got better because from the looks of things such-and-such state is having a bad year and this kid is the top kid in his state (talk about a hook!). I do hear Kansas commonly talked about on CC and you can see all the little Kansans jump into this thread. Underrepresented states are the likes of Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc- you don't hear too many kids from these parts.

TTG

I would still say that Kansas is underrepresented outside of the lower midwest. The state has a very low population and sends most of its kids to KU, KSU, and MU.

just so you all know, i go to sm northwest and i think that nobody from kansas was accepted at stanford last year

A kid name Rance, LHS class of 05, was accepted at Stanford and will attend in the fall.

Or did you mean 04?

yeah, i meant class of '04

Arup Sarma ('04) was admitted to Stanford.

sigh I'll repeat once again, Kansas is NOT an underrepresented state, in fact, it's public education system is generally regarded as one of the better ones across the nation. There are a LOT of admits to top colleges, and yes Stanford included... I don't see how "stewie06" can make that claim, which, if anything, is just a small random polling from friends of "hey, where'd that one guy from the one school one town over get into, I know he's the valedictorian. Oh, he chose to KU? Well then, no one got into 'such-and-such' school this year..." I'll go on to say, that..

"just so you all know, i go to sm northwest and i think that nobody from kansas was accepted at stanford last year"

was probably one of the dumbest statements I've ever heard on these boards. Stop gossiping- work hard and you'll find yourself at a good college (maybe you'll become part of Kansas high school lore, and talked about for many generations of teenage kansans on these boards as the kid who made it into _______).

Yeah, I think we had 2 kids from the Class of '04 get accepted to Stanford from my school (Blue Valley Northwest), although both turned it down - one went to MIT and the other to Cornell.

About class sizes, I don't have an accurate estimate of the other Blue Valley schools, but BVNW's classes are about 350-400 people.

It's good to see all these Kansans here...for a while I thought lionswim and I were the only Kansans on CC. :)

JEW711 - Are you talking about Arash and Mikhail? I met them earlier this summer - a friend of mine is a good friend of theirs.
