THANK YOU, HUSKEM!
lol.

This is a school that pioneered gender-neutral housing and made national headlines for its naked parties (which, it turned out, were more rumor than reality).

So were they ALL rumor though? ;)

Nice article.
I love you, Wesleyan :]

very weird article :D Thanks for putting this up

of course, there's been streaking and naked parties. The Times article reported that one dorm was an all-naked, all-the-time dorm and that was just ridiculous; anyone under the age of fifty could tell the kids had put one over on the reporter.:D

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a dorm for naturists at Wesleyan. :D

I love you, Wesleyan :]

Lol. Me too. Therefore vicariously I love you.

Sounds like the administration is doing a good thing by cleaning up the school.

While these kids may be brilliant, they are acting like uncivilized animals. You can not act like this in the real world. Society won't accept these people and ultimately, they will realize that they have to conform in order to be successful in life.

so let them realize later. i know i'm still longing for my days in preschool. =P besides, i think they do realize it, since they are all smart kids, but they're going to do as much as they can while they still have the chance.

I would imagine many people at Wesleyan and other quirky schools are smart enough to realize that; however, that is beside the point. People choose schools like Wes/Brown/etc. because they are so unique and different from the world outside.

"... acting like uncivilized animals... Society won't accept these people and ultimately, they will realize that they have to conform in order to be successful in life."

It's interesting to track how many of the "uncivilized animals" at Wesleyan function in the real world. Just some recent alums in the news: the mayor of Denver and his school superintendent; the coaches of the NY Jets and the NE Patriots; the winner of a MacArthur genius award who is helping revitalize the South Bronx; a recent grad whose senior film thesis won a Sundance award; an Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker; the new CEO of the Conference Board; the composer/writer of a hot new off-Broadway musical. Not to mention the founder of Southwest Airlines and the chief executive of Sun Microsystems.

I wouldn't trade Wesleyan's applicant pool for any other LAC and for only a few larger universities; it has one of the richest, deepest and most diverse in the country. It regularly rejects the highest number of qualified black applicants of any top ten LAC:

It made the Middlebury paper :D:

Like others here, I'm nowhere near as worried as you are about their ability to "make it" in the real world.

The Wesleyan grad I knew had two resumes prepared her senior year. One had all her passionate "womynist!" and out-there causes and activities on it, and the other was all business. These students are savvy enough to know what the real world requires, and they know what to leave behind when they leave campus.

I see from that table that Colgate even accepts a lower % of black candidates than Wesleyan, but I wouldn't necessarily use that as evidence that Colgate has a deep and diverse applicant pool. Plus, unless you have other info, you can't tell to what degree these applicants are 'qualified'.

Colgate, Smith, CMC and Davidson also reject more than half of all blacks who apply to their frosh class. I think it's safe to assume that included among those rejected are more qualified applicants than among the rejects of a college that rejects fewer than 29% of all black applicants.
