Kegs, Bongs, etc

Many of the college review books that i've looked at have had students indicating that Dartmouth has a large party scene which is always mentioned with alcohol. I know this question had been posed a little bit back w/ little replies, but is it possible to survive four years if you're not into the party scene or don't drink? How dominant is Greek life at Dartmouth? Thanks

I think its laid back in terms of overall student body. Many people are happy-comedian types who are smart yet don't mind playing. The party scene is pretty large, and honestly dominates social activity - which personally I loved. There is very little pressure to drink for non-drinkers though - people dance at the same parties and still hang out with their friends - just without alcohol. Also, there are a ton of outdoor activities which people love to engage. There is a rather large alternative scene that still parties. I think this is part of the laidbackness of dartmouth, you can be a jock and hang out at the "alternative" house and vice versa and not be judged unlike many other places. The frat scene is absolutely welcoming and absolutely unique in the way Dartmouth basically becomes a mini-city every weekend full of different parties and places. Everyone smiles and says hello, its a wonderful place in that way.

Finally, many clubs, such as ultimate frisbee, form their own social scenes. Remember this isnt an urban campus so the people that hate Dartmouth usually miss things like museums and coffee shops. Also, certain parts of the social scene can be intimidating, especially a few "jock" fraternaties. Those who don't like them usually dont go there, there are plenty of alternative places to hang out.
