Kelley School of Business Young Women's Institute (KSB YWI)

Hey everyone! This is a thread for those planning to attend IU Bloomington’s Kelley Young Women’s Insitute this summer. What session are you attending and what are you looking to get out of the experience?

My niece is attending during the session starting June 19th. She has many different interests and is hoping to determine if studying business is the direction she wishes to go.

My daughter is also attending June 19th and for the same reason hoosiermom.

Hello! I attended YWI last summer and I can attest to the fact that this experience is what convinced me to major in business. I am now a direct admit into the Kelley School of Business and I can’t wait for the year to start. Here are some important tips to making this one of the best weeks of the summer:

  1. Don't count on getting a lot of sleep this week. Your counselors have every day planned to the last minute (there's a tight schedule) and you'll need to be on top of things. There's so much that's going on everyday that you actually don't want to miss any of it.
  2. Do not be afraid of making new friends. Even if socializing is not your cup of tea, this program is a wonderful way to meet like-minded, intelligent, and hard-working girls (like you!) from all over the United States. Reach out and say hi. You never know, one of your best friends could be among the girls in your session! It's a short program so don't wait - the first day is the best day to meet new people. Every one there is thrown into a new environment just like you, so be friendly! Additionally, you'll have presentations from various professors (international business, accounting, finance, management, etc), so you'll leave with a greater understanding of all these majors at the end. Don't be afraid to make connections with the professors. You'll meet so many amazing individuals - take the time to introduce yourself!
  3. BRING A LAPTOP, BLANKETS, AND AN UMBRELLA. First off, you'll be participating in a real-life case competition in an assigned group. This is exactly like the case competitions that college students participate in- you want to be prepared. Though there are computer labs, you'll want your own to make updates and additions to your presentations (I didn't bring one and I regretted it). Secondly, it's surprisingly cold in the dorm room - bring a blanket just in case. And lastly, Indiana weather is so unpredictable- even if it doesn't look like it's going to rain, have an umbrella on you just in case. Seriously, just do it.
  4. The case competition. As mentioned before, this a defining activity of YWI. You will spend copious amounts of time on this presentation. Dive right in and give It your all. Work diligently with your group - everyone may not have the same ideas, but LISTEN TO EACH OTHER. You may have just met these girls, but it's super important that you get along with them!! If you do, you'll create a strong business presentation and make strong connections with those girls. I know I did.
  5. FOOD. Oh gosh, you'll be so well fed during this week, it's insane. The food is amazing: YWI caters food from various restaurants throughout the week. This was honestly one of the best parts :) If you have time, I highly recommend getting "Baked" cookies (your counselors will know about them) - these are AMAZING. You'll want to try them.

And I think that just about sums it up! I was terrified going into this, but it was a fantastic experience. Even though it’s only a week, it’ll be one of the best. Don’t waste a single minute.

I hope you have a fantastic time. Go Hoosiers!

@sweetgeek25 I attended YWI last summer as well, and I am also a DA to Kelley!! Which session were you in??

@madguru @hoosiermom @Salemlaxmom I completely echo everything that sweetgeek25 says. Also I can’t remember if they mentioned this in all of the paperwork, but bring a suit. You can get a reasonably priced jacket and skirt from H&M on short notice. I also say to bring cute but comfy shoes-if your daughter insists on heels (which are great) make sure that they’re comfortable for walking. You definitely don’t get any sleep but it’s so much fun and you get to have such a great time with the other girls!! I think that at least one of the chaperones from last year is doing it again, and she is really friendly! Good luck to your daughters!!!

@ogsquirrelgirl Session A!!

Hey, I’m so excited to be attending the June 19th session! I’m really nervous because the packet said that the average gpa is 3.9 and I’m afraid that everybody else will be so much smarter than me! I feel truly blessed to be selected! Could anyone tell me more about the case presentation competition? Also, I saw etiquette dinner on the schedule. I was never really trained much on etiquette- are we given tips on it?

Also, how selective is Kelley direct admit?

@KalaniAnne the case competition is different ever year, but it’s usually problem to help a real business. Last year, we helped a local business- my sister’s closet. you’re given an issue and you and your team come up with a business presentation to solve/alleviate the problem. you’re given a fair chunk of time throughout the week and you can run your presentations by the counselors/ people they bring in to help you! it’s an amazing experience.

I’m attending June22th session! I’m so nervous right now for the exact same reasons as you! And also because I’m the only out of states girl… After attending the program, could you write some tips for us to learn about the etiquette and presentation part??? @KalaniAnne
