Has anyone attended? Advice and comments?

Hi! I attended YWI last year and I really loved it! It put IU on my college list and I’m actually attending IU this fall. The campus is beautiful and the people are really great; I met some pretty awesome people and the staff is really helpful. The actual program is more marketing based (though most business camps generally are) and I’m not very keen on marketing, but the time I spent there was quite memorable. There is also a good deal of time spent on other aspects like, networking, presentation skills, etc. I must say one thing though, (as most other colleges do for their camps/programs) YWI does spend a significant amount of the week talking about the college itself: the programs, the college, that kind of thing. I don’t know how difficult it is exactly to ‘get in the program’, I’m and oos student, so it might have been easier for me, but, not totally sure.
If you have any other questions, let me know! I’d be glad to tell you more :]

So good to hear! Thanks for your reply :)

Hey there! I’m a Georgia resident and very interested in the YWI program. Any thoughts (or tips for admission!)? Many thanks in advance!

Apply Feb/March Junior Year of HS. Invitations are based on GPA, EC’s, Essay. Two different groups of about 25 girls, in June. Great intro to Kelley and IU!

My D (OOS) attended YWI two summers ago and she is now a freshman at Kelley. It is a marketing tool to get more females in the B-school as one of the Kelley admissions people told us that women comprise only about 1/3 of Kelley undergrad students. My D enjoyed the week and it made her more comfortable with the campus. We highly recommend it.

@ldavis and @racquetdad Thank you guys so much! My gpa will be about 3.7 (depending on my precalc grade) and I should have strong teacher recommendations. I am a captain of my sports team and have a couple other leadership roles. Any thoughts about what Kelley will look for in the essay? Thanks again!

Whoops-- meant to add what do you think are my chances?

With a 3.7 GPA you will be in the mix. I think the average GPA is about 3.8. I don’t have any tips for the essay other than to be original and write what you want - don’t try to guess what YWI admissions wants. Good luck.

I think you may have to propose your own business of some sort. You can be thinking about that… It’s pretty selective but with Leadership and a good ACT/SAT , decent GPA your chances should be good. It’s all paid-for by the way except transportation. They really roll out the red carpet, nice lunches, visit to a local corporation, etiquette dinner, etc. Fun, fun week! Then there’s a reunion weekend in September. Another chance to stay in the dorms and visit a Kelley class.

I have a 3.7 or so UW but in all honors courses and >2300 SAT OOS do I have a chance? I’m interested in this program because if I engage in the earlier session I can still go to Cali for a week and do research and I wanted to do both business and science this summer haha
Hi! I am actually applying this year (sorry for bringing up an old thread) and I kinda want to see how I match up. Could you help me with that?
Hey @nomorethan16 I attended YWI last year and I loved it! It was such a great experience, I fell in love with IU and next fall I’m attending on a full ride. When I applied for YWI I had a 3.6 unweighted and a 4.4 weighted and I was out of state. It was so much fun I highly recommend it. Let me know if you have anymore questions I’d be more than happy to answer them I can talk on and on about YWI!!
@teenagecrime I think you’ll definitely get in! I was OOS and had slightly lower stats and I got in. Let me know if you have any questions, I love talking about YWI!!
@IUBound16 haha i actually posted this last year and ended up spending my summer traveling and working at a research camp.
Okay so I am Asian and a sophomore (NJ) my transcript only shows my freshman grades and I took a few accelerated/weighted courses that year (biology, algebra 2, spanish) and I ended with a 4.0 unweighted (4.33 weighted). This year I am taking AP macro/micro, APUSH, AP stat, pre calc accel, chem accel, regular english (only level offered), accel spanish (I’m doing horribly in precalc, midyear grade is B+ and i’m struggling to hold that LOL --everthing else is an A though). EC’s include sports co-editor of newspaper, i do debate and I’m okay at it, treasurer of my class, business manager of literary arts mag, and co-leader of a service club (Operation smile). My rec is from my AP macro/micro teacher…do you think I have a shot as a sophomore?
@IUbound16
also some questions…how were the people who attended? Was the community nice? I am really interested in pursueing business and seeing this program seemed really cool. Is it very intense? What would you say is the most beneficial thing about attending?
@nomorethan16 1st thing YWI is for girls going into their senior year of high school… So you would have to wait until next year to apply. But I think that you are going to be a really strong applicant for it next year if you keep doing the same things and keep your grades up. To answer your questions, all the people who attended were so nice and there were a lot of different types of girls there so there’ll definitely be a least one person, most likely a whole group of girls, that you’ll get a long with. I made some really close friends there, I’m actually going to IU next year and rooming with one of the girls that I made friends with at YWI. All of the chaperons who were Kelley students that also went to YWI were really amazing and they helped to make you feel welcome and comfortable. I wouldn’t say that the program was intense or competitive at all, it was really just about a bunch of brilliant young girls coming together to learn about business and have a good time together, one of the nights we stayed up and ordered cookies and had a dance party, sooo much fun. There was a case study that you got put into groups for and had to present and there was a winner (my group!!!) but it wasn’t competitive in any sense. I think the most beneficial thing about it other than getting exposed to IU and Kelley, was learning more about business from real professors. Professors from each department (accounting, finance, marketing, business law and ethics, international business, etc.) gave us lectures, which was great because a lot of people know that they want to do business, but they don’t always know exactly what that means, so those lectures were really beneficial because they helped me and a lot of other girls figure out what in business they want to study even if it wasn’t at Kelley.
I’m sorry that was really long, but I hope it was helpful!!!
