I just want to hear what people have to say about both of these schools.

I've heard a lot of stories about drug problems at Kent.
Also heard that kids at Milton kind of run around unsupervised, and are out of control.
These 2 schools that I am very interested in, and are at the top of my list. Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

Also any info on NMH, Deerfield, Choate, SPS, Loomis, or Williston would be awesome!!!
Thanks!

Milton is like a small college with a campus and multiple buildings. There are a wide range of classes, arts, music, clubs, sports and social events running all week long. The schedule builds a number of open periods into each week, and allows the student to manage his or her time and follow his or her interests.

While the schedules have more “free” times than a normal high school, I would not say the students are out of control. The kinds of kids that Milton attracts are extremely bright, personally responsible, academically engaged, and usually also have non-academic passions that keep them active and busy. The homework is intense (!) and there is no time for hanging around - so many of these free periods are spent in the lab, studio, gym or library.

There are also safety nets. Each student has an advisor to keep an eye on their progress. But again, the advisors are there to support the students; not to direct them or to watch them during the day.

Milton has both boarders and day students. Day students will be on campus from 7am to 4pm or 6pm and regularly return for evening or weekend events. Dining halls are open to all students for all meals. Boarders live in mixed-grade houses with house parents and do have closer supervision with regular check-ins and house-only dinners. Boarders have a higher level of supervision at nights although again during the day there is no distinction.

Overall Milton is a wonderful place of vast possibility for kids who are able and ready for it. This is definitely not the right place for kids who need close supervision during the day.

@bostdad2 Thanks so much for the info. I loved the school, and it is my top choice. I like having freedom, and feel like I am very independent, which is why I think I would thrive at a place like Milton!

Bostdad2, that’s a wonderfully detailed and helpful post, thank you.

NikDangles, I’ve looked at your other posts, and as a hockey player have you looked at Noble & Greenough? They are ranked #1 in New England right now and have a boarding option.

I believe Nobles’ boarding option is only Mon-Fri, not 7-day.
