Kenyon College Class of 2019 RD Results

Hi guys! Being that decisions have just been released, I thought it would be smart to make a decisions thread so that future applicants can see what’s up, and that maybe we can try to get a little closure if we were rejected/waitlisted.

Try to post your decisions in the following format:

Just remove the first ‘a’ in the bold, size and color in your decision.

Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: 100-120 hours over the last three summers at a horseback riding camp for children with disabilities
Summer Activities: College class in ASL at Rutgers, Volunteering
Essay: Prompt three. About challenging people’s beliefs by being physically strong. It focused on my ability to do a lot of push-ups even though I’m a petite, nerdy girl. It was kind of humorous, and I spent a long time on it. Everyone who read it liked it. 9/10
Teacher Recommendations: 1st Rec: Not sure, he saw me help out a student in one notable instance in his class, but it’s impossible to say if he wrote about it.
2nd Rec: I think it was probably pretty good. I gave him a lot of supplemental information to pull from, and him and I were kind of on the same wavelength (he got the Portal reference I made in an essay once lol)
Counselor Rec: She likes me, but it was probably kind of bland. She has 239 other kids to worry about.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: Did not request an interview. I think this was a big mistake on my part.

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores (except SAT Math), marching band awards
Weaknesses: Course load rigor could be better, only one substantial EC, didn’t show sufficient interest
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think the interest thing had a lot to do with it. I was on Kenyon’s mailing list, but that was about it.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to Rutgers and the University of Alabama EA, accepted to WashU RD, waitlisted at UVa

General Comments: A little surprised about this, but not shocked. I was actually kind of hoping for one of the scholarships, clearly a misjudgment on my part. The takeaway for future applicants is SHOW INTEREST! Request an interview, and visit campus if you can. Now I’m off to go re-read my WashU acceptance letter. :stuck_out_tongue:

Reflection

Strengths: I’d been to the Kenyon Young Writers Workshop, which they mentioned. I had strong recs, ECs, scores, essays, etc. Most importantly, I sold myself as an artist and a writer. I’m from Mississippi, so I’m a geographic minority, and that helps a lot.
Weaknesses: My senior year grades were weak, and I don’t really do any community service.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I had the geo minority card, I had strong scores and whatnot, good essays. The KYRW was a big deal.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: So far, deferred from Brown and Yale-NUS and accepted at Hong Kong University.

General Comments: You can absolutely make up for weaknesses in some areas of your app with strengths in others. Not so at some more selective universities. Also, I got an honor scholarship for 25k a year, which is a nice perk. Good look to all!

Essay: Relatively Unique and definitely showed my character. But not necessarily my absolute best

Additional Rec:N/A
Interview: It went extremely well. It lasted an hour and a half long and I’m still in contact with the guy who interviewed me. We really clicked and just talked to each other very genuinely for the entire time, the best interview I had by far

Other

State (if domestic applicant): Indiana
Country (if international applicant): US
School Type: Public (should be noted it is a highly regarded public school and large at 5000 kids)
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender:F
Income Bracket: 100,000 or less
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):None really-although such a high commitment to 4-H is somewhat unique but not always highly regarded. Also technically legacy because both my aunt and uncle went there, not quite sure it matters. They also donated I believe

Reflection

Strengths: Standardized Scores, Interview, Extra curriculars
Weaknesses: Senior Grades lower than past years (AP Physics man) and essay not the best
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Strong interview, decent scores good GPA
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:Accepted: NE (merit), IU (provost, SGIS Direct Admit), Brandeis, Waitlisted: UVa

General Comments: I think my strong interview really helped to get me in, other people wishing to attend should also look into the interviews. I was kind of hoping for one of the scholarships but after seeing all of the very high scores of other applicants, I can see why I did not receive one. I did get a significant grant though so that’s okay anyways.

Decision: Waitlisted :frowning:

ACT: 30 (E:35, M:24, R:34, S:28)

Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.34

Job/Work Experience: 25 hours a week at Panera (but not at the time of my application)

Volunteer/Community service: 80 hours of various services over all of high school. Primarily Habitat for Humanity and Drama Camp assistant.

Essay: Damn good. Got it professionally critiqued twice.

Teacher Recommendation: Average

Counselor Rec: Wait we needed one of those

Interview: Applied for one but had no alumni in my area.

Other: Struggled a lot with undiagnosed ADD and Depression for all of high school. Really emphasized that in the “special circumstances” section.

State (if domestic applicant): Kentucky

School Type: Private and Catholic

Ethnicity: Biracial. White/Caribbean.

Gender: Female

Income Bracket: $100,000-$125,000

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Ethnicity

Strengths: High english and reading ACT score, essay writing. Demonstrated interest.

Weaknesses: GPA from hell, not too many extracurriculars or special skills.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Poor GPA and lack of hooks. Frankly I was expecting to be rejected outright. I think what saved me was my essay and emphasis on the struggles I faced in high school.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to NKU, UC, and Marist as of now. Waiting on Oberlin, Vassar, NYU, Haverford.

[]Weaknesses: My grades aren’t amazing, and neither are my scores
    [
]Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think CW really saved me and I think Kenyon really needs minorities. They basically met my EFC and asked only for a 2500 loan so I think they liked me.
[]Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at an instate school, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Hollins
    [
]General Comments: I’m not sure if I’m going to attend. It’s the smartest choice so far because money but whoooo knows, I’m really worried about there being no minorities and not having options to get off, but besides that it’s perfect.

Decision: Accepted w/15k Scholarship

SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t take

Essay: Pretty good, not my best. Re-wrote it a couple times…couldn’t seem to get it just how I wanted it, but I tend to be highly critical of my writing.
Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read them, but they were from two teachers I was very very close with. I’d imagine they were pretty good.
Counselor Rec: Probably pretty good, hard to say because my counselor has a lot of kids to deal with.
Additional Rec: Probably pretty well written…from my debate coach (who holds a PhD)
Interview: Kind of rocky honestly…asked some pretty unorthodox questions. I mean, It went pretty well but it definitely wasn’t my best.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): OH
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Mid-size public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 100-150k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None unfortunately

Reflection

Strengths: My extracurricular involvements aligned heavily with my major (political science) and I think I showed a good deal of genuine interest. (2 visits, an overnight, and an interview)
Weaknesses: Like I said, my interview was kind of weird (not sure how much that impacts their decision/allocation of merit aid) and I think my test scores and GPA were just slightly too low to be granted a bigger scholarship.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Interest, strong academics, decent well-roundedness
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at American, Colby, Dension, Case Western, OSU, Dayton. Waitlisted at Rhodes (showed zero interest)

General Comments: I came to love Kenyon. Gambier is a very unique town and the atmosphere and academic approach at Kenyon are both fantastic. However, coming it at about 45k a year…it’s too expensive for me, unfortunately. :frowning:

Other

U.S. State/Territory or Country: GA
School Type: large, competitive private school
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range: very high
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): None

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, SAT scores, strong grades (for my school)
Weaknesses: mediocre ECs, easy course load in 9th Grade
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m a good fit for Kenyon and had an excellent interview, middle-high stats, and a good common app essay.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Middlebury and Georgia Tech, still waiting on Oberlin, Carleton, and Reed.

General Comments: Kenyon is a fantastic place, and I’m so excited to have the opportunity to attend next year! It seems as though the college admissions process is largely “luck of the draw”, and I just happen to have been one of the lucky ones. I haven’t decided yet on a college yet of course, but Kenyon’s definitely up there on my list.

Decision: Accepted

SAT I (breakdown): 730 CR, 690 M, 610 W (didn’t send)

Volunteer/Community service: I started a service organization with my brother that does maintenance and construction work for the poor and disabled.

Essay:Pretty good, I wrote about a series of encounters I had with an addict and how it effected me. I also sent in a supplemental short story and another essay (Look “Weaknesses”)
Teacher Recommendation: One was very good, I have a good relationship with the teacher and she sung praises abt me. The second was alright, I looked it over after the teacher sent it and actually caught a few errors she missed.
Counselor Rec: Good, I go to a small school so I have a good, personal relationship with my counselor.
Additional Rec: I had the principal of my high school send one in as well (Look “Weaknesses”)
Interview: Alright, didn’t make a bad impression I don’t think but I don’t remember saying anything remarkable.

Other

State (if domestic applicant):OH
Country (if international applicant):
School Type:Private Catholic
Ethnicity:White
Gender:Male
Income Bracket: Pretty poor, I have a very large family. I got a very generous aid package.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection

Strengths: I demonstrated an impressive amount of interest, I’m a good writer, and the service organization I started.
Weaknesses: GPA could be better, but the BIGGEST weakness I had was the fact I got kicked out of their writing camp for various reasons. I actually applied ED and got deferred to RD because they asked the director of the writing camp about me and learned I’d gotten the boot over the summer. To get back in their good graces I had to submit an extra essay apologizing for my actions detailing what happened during the camp. I also got my principal to write a letter vouching for my character.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I demonstrated a lot of interest, my essays and supplements were well written, and I had good recommendations. They also mentioned my service organization in my letter as a big factor.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to OSU, Loyola Chicago and John Carroll.
General Comments: Sort of surprised I got in after the hole I dug, but very very happy! With the aid they gave me I don’t see any reason why I won’t be attending Kenyon College this fall, as long as my grades don’t tank.

Decision: Accepted

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NY
Country (if international applicant):

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Mountain School experience, Theater kid

Reflection

Strengths: My essay and my letters of recommendation. I was really able to showcase my writing talent in my essay, and because kenyon is a writers college, they appreciated it. I have a very very close relationship with both of the teachers who wrote my recs
Weaknesses: MY ACT SCORE. I’m looking at all of these other posts and I noticed that I have a really low score comparatively.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I showed so much interest, and I think Kenyon is an awesome fit for me.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted: Bard and UVM (EA), Rejected: Middlebury, Colby (didn’t show any interest) Waitlisted: Bates

Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description):
-Intern at a zebrafish lab this summer, worked with a Smith professor looking at the effect of anesthesia on neurons
-Member of the Ukulele Club since 10th grade, VP last year and president this year.
-In Chamber Choir, a selective audition-only group, for 11th and 12th grade, which is a class but also performs outside of school. This has been a pretty important and time-consuming commitment, both in practicing/learning my part for class and in after school performances.
-Tons of theater stuff–small named roles in two school musicals, props manager for a student-run production, assistant stage manager for the premiere of a newly-written play in my town, stage manager for a senior production.
-Latin Tutor at my high school
-Spanish immersion program after freshman year that increased my proficiency
-Model UN for 2 years
Volunteer at Animal Shelter since 11th grade-I recently stopped because of time constraints but I cared for the cats every Sunday morning for 3 hours.
Job/Work Experience: none, besides babysitting

Writing:
Essay: I put a ton of work into this. I wrote about my love of the Classics (Latin and Greek), about 550 words.
Teacher Recommendation #1: From my Latin teacher, probably a 9
Teacher Recommendation #2: From my AP Chem teacher probably an 8
Counselor Rec: she knew me well and took the time to meet with me throughout the college process
Additional Info/Rec: 1 from my Greek teacher, probably a 10 because he is wonderful and Greek is my best class, 1 from my Chamber Choir teacher, probably a 9 because she loves everyone.
Interview: It went well! It was pretty casual and about equal focus on getting to know me and trying to sell the school.

Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): nope

Reflection:
Strengths: My essays and teacher recs
Weaknesses: SAT I scores were maybe a bit low
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think I had a strong essay that showed my passion for Classics and good teacher recs. I didn’t show that much interest, but I think requesting an interview helped.
What would you have done differently?: nothing!
Where else did you apply? Accepted: Wellesley (Likely from early eval), Denison, St. Olaf. Rejected: Pomona. Waiting on: Carleton (my top choice), Conn College, Tufts

General Comments: YAY! Kenyon is probably my second choice after Carleton, so I’m pretty excited! Good luck to everyone, whether accepted, rejected, or wait listed. pce love and woodstock nation

Wait listed (?)

Essay: wrote about my front porch and how I’ve grown through the different conversations I’ve had there
Teacher Recommendation 1: AP Lang teacher, got to know her pretty well and did a lot of good work in her class. Didn’t get to read but I’ve been accepted to everything she’s ever written a rec for, so…
Teacher Recommendation 2: APUSH teacher, also did good work in his class and really learned a lot. He liked me but I didn’t get to know him as well as my lang teacher so I can’t say for sure how it was
Counselor Rec: Kenyon wrote to me in my acceptance letter specifically about how lovely her rec was; have only had her for a year but we connected very well
Interview: interviewed in November in DC, had a decent conversation with a really nice person, but not my best interview at all. Also visited last spring.

Reflection

Strengths: essay, counselor rec, English and history grades, demonstrated interest, and the interview probably helped
Weaknesses: SAT scores, math grades
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I really didn’t think I would get in! I guess what they looked at more than my scores and grades (which I worked extremely hard for and are pretty good but not great) was how good of a fit the school was. They have an amazing English program, and that is where I’ve always thrived ( and my intended major.) I’m still trying to process why though, especially because other applicants from my school who had better grades and scores were waitlisted/rejected.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
so far, accepted to: Lawrence University (w/ scholarship), Dickinson College (w/ scholarship), Beloit College (w/ scholarship), University of Vermont (w/ scholarship). Rejected from: Grinnell College. Waiting to hear from: Oberlin College, Bennington College
(Kenyon was my top choice and biggest reach)

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None really…

Reflection

Strengths: Common App essay? Recs? I went to two schools at the same time? I speak 5 languages? IDK, really.
Weaknesses: SAT scores, I asked for a lot of financial aid
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: No idea, honestly. Maybe because they don’t get a lot of applicants from Hungary?
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: USC (SoCal - accepted w/ full-tuition scholarship), Occidental (waitlisted), Vanderbilt (rejected), still waiting on Oberlin, Vassar, Amherst, Swarthmore, Penn, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Johns Hopkins.

General Comments: I love Kenyon, and I got excellent financial aid, but I probably won’t attend. I got a full-tuition scholarship to USC (to the film school!), which was my first choice & has been my dream school for a really long time. Plus, I’m a Film major, and USC is the best in film.
