Kenyon College or CU Boulder?

Hi,

As a parent of a son who has been accepted to Kenyon College and CU Boulder, Arts and Sciences Honor's Program, we have visited both places. As you can imagine these are completely different types of schools. He seems to be leaning toward CU Boulder, but we would like to see him go to Kenyon. He is very into rock climbing part of the appeal of Boulder, but West Virginia also has some good spots. Anyway, we realize that attending a college/university is not all about an extracurricular activity. Any feedback from current students, former students, or parents would be much appreciated. We are very aware about the advantages and disadvantages of both small and large, but would like more about these from the vantage point of current or former students from both places. Thanks in advance.

My kid is at a small college in Colorado, so I can see the appeal of both CU’s location and Kenyon’s smaller size. Wife and BIL both graduated from CU.

Let me put it this way. My son loves the Colorado environment. He is very social and outdoorsy, too. In fact, he’s been doing quite a bit of rock climbing this year. But when we talk on the phone, typically what he’s most focused on and excited about are his classes. Small discussion classes and good interaction with faculty distinguish the liberal arts college experience. He’ll get that at Kenyon. Not so much at CU, unless the honors program is set up to stress these things and they are attracting many top students. If so, then maybe CU would be a better choice. Congratulations in either case. He has two good options.
