What are the main differences between Vassar and Kenyon, particularly in terms of social scene?
What type of student would fit in better at which? Which would be better for a student who was shy in high school, looking to break out of his shell a little in college?
My kid visited both, several times, so take this with a grain of salt, but here are our impressions – Vassar has about 2400 students vs. Kenyon’s about 1650 students, so the larger student body can make it a little easier to find your “tribe.” On the other hand, Kenyon has greek life which is “non-traditional” in that there are not separate residential fraternity/sorority houses, but rather, as we were told, greek life members are assigned to clusters of space in regular dorms. Greek life can be a way for students to find their “family,” though, as a parent with one in greek life, and one not in greek life, there are advantages and disadvantages, and only a student/family can decide whether it makes sense. Both schools have more women than men, so that can make the social life a little easier on a male looking to “break out of his shell” more. Both are great schools!
