i noe a superb GPA is needed ..but wut other factors are involved provided that my SAT and high school grades arent that stellar....if aim for Chicago and same-caliber school?

I heard ppl said that if u have a weak hs grade, 2nd yr is the best time to apply transfers...and furthermore..for economics major, do you need to co-publish some good papers and get in good contact with professors at target schools?

I think they look at spelling.

You wouldn't be expected to co-publish a paper as a freshman.

I made this stupid post a while back:

"It also depends on the college. I'm sure recs and essays mean a lot more to UChicago than NYU...
On average, I think its like this:
College GPA: 30% (In this 10% difficulty of courses)
HS GPA: 20%
EC's (imp if you continue HS ec's in C): 10%
Recs: 10%
Essays: 15%
Tests: 15%

However, an amazing essay will raise the percentage to 30+ %, I think amazing recs would help up to 20%, I don't think tests will raise in value unless you have a really high score and you are applying to a college with a relatively low SAT/ACT average, I doubt recs would go above 25% in value, HS GPA would be about 25-30% for a freshman and 15-20% as sophmores, college GPA will be 30-50% according to your course load, college, and status (freshman/sophmore). And I think I spent 1000% more time on this than I should have..."

sorri for the typo.....isn't GPA the biggest factor after all? then comes to the ACADEMIC related EC i think..not something useless like community service, volunteer.....and then test scores.....maybe lab experience can help a lot...

and btw...it's hard to get a good rec from big size university...

when you're applying to be a sophomore - don't high school grades still have more weight, since when you apply you only have actually COMPLETED one full semester??

Yeah community service is pointless. I mean who wants to be a better person after all?

I'm too tired to make sense of your post, try a little harder next time.

I think a good question to answer here would be if its worth pursuing a good connection/relationship with a professor at your target transfer school - Personally I think that's kind of over doing it and you might be seen as just a suck up, but then again it might help alot...

Most school take a hard look at the high school transcript and SAT/ACT score for sophmore transfers as you have had only one semester of college for them to look at. While they might still require you to send in your high school transcript for junior transfer, most colleges really want to see what you have done in college.

Also, what they want to see is how you've matured in the past year or two since high school. That's why there's less emphasis on the high school record (and SATs) the further away you are from it. BTW, jacknjill's list above is a pretty good one; what's missing are the weight of any interview that may be required (usually 10-15%, depending on the school) and anything extra that might have relevance to strengthen the application.

some schools only look at your high school transcript to make sure you have taken certain classes. i was contacted by smu (#13 in the US for mba) asking for my high school transcript. I asked what role it played in the decision and the woman on the phone said it was just to see what classes I took and that the grades did not matter, only college grades do. not all colleges are like this but it can be a relief for some. the more college stuff they have to look at, the less your high school record plays in the process.
