Kid From Small Town Wondering If He Has Any Chance....

I'm an Asian living in a very small and rural town where we still have cows on the side of streets. Rarely does anyone from my high school attend somewhere prestigious; most just to go the state school. My family is by all means not rich and the being from a small town, my school doesn't offer much opportunities. With that said, I was wondering if I might be able to go to Johns Hopkins Univeristy with these stats:

SAT (old): 1390 (710M)(680V)
SAT (new): 2130 (690M)(740V)(700W)

SAT II Bio:750; Math Level II: 750; Chemistry :750

Gpa: Approximately 92.3 =3.7?

Class Rank: 17 out of 245, top 10%

Taken all the hardest courses my school offers, which are very little. It only offers Ap English in Junior year.

Ap English: 4

Senior year taking AP: English, Psychology, Calc, and Probability/Stats.

My EC's are all right. I do play Jv baseball and do have other leaderships.

Do I have a chance in hell of attending the following: Johns Hopkins, Cornell, Boston College, and Tufts?

Does it matter that my school did not send anybody to any of the Ivies is the past 10 years?

You have a shot at all the schools on your list - but they are all very competitive and its not possible to be really sure how things will play out. Your scores are strong enough that your application will be given a fair read, so your essays, short answers, teacher recommendations, and even the way you list your ec's are all going to come into play. To give yourself the best chance, take as much care as possible on the application itself.

My son is at UChicago - our area is semi-rural, cows, maybe one kid attends an elite every other year - and was not in the top ten percent - so it can be done - don't lose heart. On the other hand, you have listed all schools that are either reasonable reaches or reachy matches. You need a couple of likely admits to be safe. What are you thinking of for a major?

Might want to look at Holy Cross or Colgate-both a good mix of academics and athletics.

What happened on the math section? It looks like you did well for the subject test.

BTW, You did well on the math section, but I thought that the subject test was harder than the regular SAT.

To tell you the truth, I felt very sick the day I took the SAT's and adding salt to the wound was the fact that someone stole my TI-83 on that day. I hope to apply Early Decision to Cornell and major something in the College of Human Ecology.

Bump Bump Bump Bump

I think you'll be ok with the college of human ecology with the math score - and the SAT II confirms that you can do math.

Ohio Mom, I was wondering if this will have a significant impact on my chances. I have taken the hardest courses my school offers except for my freshman year during which I only took one honors class. For sophomore and juniors years though, I've takent the hardest courses. I also have three B's--two in sophomore year and one in junior english AP, though I scored a 4.

Bump Bump Bump Bump

No offense, but won't it look bad if you have Bs at a mediocre high school?

Tufts? I think so :) As a general word of advice, I'd stress on your application the description of your home town and how you'd like to escape and see the outside world - not only for Tufts, but for all of your applications as the universities like "liberating" students like you.

Yeah, I Know, it kinda sucks. My English teacher, I swear to God, was out to get me.
