Should minors that commit a violent crime be sent to prison as an adult? Opinions differ. Most minors who commit a crime may not understand the right or wrong. Recent studies suggest that the brains prefrontal lobe, which some scientists speculate plays a crucial role in inhibiting inappropriate behavior, may not reach full development until age 20. (TIME) Other minors may live in an unsafe environment where their parents actions are violent. It should not be the minors fault if he or she was provided with a weapon from an adult. The adult should be punished the same as the minor. I feel that minors who are under the age of thirteen should not be tried as an adult, but, in the juvenile justice system. It gives the minors a second chance to turn their lives around. As minors who are over thirteen, they should know the good and bad actions. Yet, with their actions, they should be tried as an adult.
Regardless of their age, Lionel Tate, was twelve years old, when he murdered a six year old playmate. Lionel Tate was fourteen when he was convicted as an adult. As a crime like, Tate, a teenager should understand his actions at that age. Another article about Tate explains a forensic psychologist, Michael Brannon, whom examined Tate and concluded that he was not suffering from mental illness, but had, "a high potential for violence, uncontrolled feelings of anger, resentment, and poor impulse control." That would conclude his action to the six year old murder and other convictions in his account.
Before Lionel Tate was penalized, Nathaniel Brazil, a fourteen year old, committed a second degree murder by killing his English teacher. The charge usually carries a prison term of up to 30 years, but Brazils defense team is hopeful the sentencing judge will be more lenient in this case. I believe the judge should not be lenient because he murdered his teacher for whatever reason. Did Brazils defense team want him to kill more people? He should be sentenced like Lionel Tate. They are not just fourteen year old little boys, but more as an adult for committing a crime.
In Paducah, KY., a fourteen year old, killed three girls in their school lobby. Authorities said he had several guns with him, and the alleged murder weapon was one of seven stolen from a neighbors garage.(2) Theft is one of the methods that kids have access to guns. Families, friends, and neighbors should secure their guns in a place where kids will not have access to them. In this case, an eight year old boy was charged with premeditated double murder for killing his father and another man, how did a little boy get a hold of a gun? Answer, Reports indicate the father taught his son how to use guns. Since the family members are avid hunters, the father specifically taught his son how to use a rifle to shoot prairie dogs. (LAW) The father is providing his son a gun for hunting. I believe there is no problem with that because the father is instructing him on a father and son activity. The boy should not be tried as an adult because he is still young and does not know what his actions are. But, I do believe he should be placed in the juvenile justice system so that he can be punished.
Peoples opinions varies in this issue because one may be against minors tried as an adult as another may say go for it.
