Kind of Self-Studying AP Calculus AB

Okay, so here's my situation: at my school, the teacher that teaches AP Calculus AB and BC is on leave for personal reasons, and my principal gave the students that signed up for the course two options if we still wanted to take the AP test come May. She said we could take the AP Calculus AB class online through FLVS. Our other option is to take Honors Calculus, supplementing what's learned in class with more in-depth knowledge and learning the last three chapters. I would've just taken it online, but my parents firmly said that I cannot. I've tried arguing for it for the past week, and trust me, they'll never say yes.

I know that the curriculum for the Honors Calculus class won't match up to that of AP Calculus AB, though on the bright side I'll be in a class with a teacher. Does anyone have any advice they could offer about self-studying for the exam? I know that I would need to get myself a good AP book, but it'd have to be one that could supplement what I'm missing by taking the Honors class. Also, this might be a good time to mention that I've never self-studied for AP before. Any advice would be a blessing. Thank you guys so much. <3

I think it’s best you take Honors Calculus with an AP Calculus AB prep book with you. So you learn the basic material and then you can go more in to the AP material with the prep book.

Here is a list of everything covered in AP Calculus AB

Functions, Graphs, and Limits-

Analysis of Graphs
Limits of Functions (incl. one-sided limits)
Asymptotic and Unbounded Behavior
Continuity as a Property of Functions

Derivatives-

Concept of the Derivative
Derivative at a Point
Derivative as a Function
Second Derivatives
Applications of Derivatives
Computation of Derivatives

Integrals-

Interpretations and Properties of Definite Integrals
Applications of Integrals
Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
Techniques of Antidifferentiation
Applications of Antidifferentiation
Numerical Approximations to Definite Integrals

Also, this book should be very helpful so you can understand and practice how the questioning works…

@Laura280‌ Thank you so much for the outline. I have my sister’s 5 Steps to a 5 500 Questions book, should I use that for practice or still buy the Princeton? Also, as for a Prep Book, do you have any recommendations?

I also recommend the Barron’s AP Calculus book. The questions can be harder than the actual exam but it’ll really prepare you!

@awakeningvenus‌ I also recommend Barron’s. Not sure how good Princeton is…

But you should be fine! Good luck!

@guineagirl96‌ @Laura280 Thank you guys so much! I’ll definitely make sure to get the Barron’s book. I feel a lot better now. ^_^
