Kinglin wants to be a doctor

The medical field has always interested me, and I've always love to hear about how a person is treated in such. It's just that I've never taken chemistry. I've taken physical science, biology, and physics. This year I'm currently not taking any science.

I would like to work with children and be a children's doctor. What exactly must I do, if I want to make a career out of that?

Thanks for the help.

There are plenty of detailed threads on this. Run a search. After the whole pre-med ordeal, and medical school, you can go into a residency (post-medical school training): pediatrics, medicine/pediatrics, or surgery with a subspecialty in pediatrics. To become a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon, for example it's 5 years general surgery residency, followed by a two year cardiothoracic fellowship, followed by a two year pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. You're ~35 years old by the end of your training by this route.

I didn't really know if you wanted post-med school advice or college advice or whatever. You do need chemisty to get into medical school though. Try the medical careers forum too.

holy cow. I didn't know medicine takes up so much time. Are people properly paid during the residencies and fellowships?

Minimum wage yes.

^ HAHAHAHAHA mahras2 hilarious man. greencloth, I can assure you, during residency, they are paid enough to survive. But there is one problem, you get no sleep because whenever the hospital calls you, you HAVE to go. (so basically, they will call you all day, all night). They pay you definitely and you will be able to pay for clothes, food, living expenses. You do get MORE than minimum wage, I can assure. But when you become a doctor, you get paid A LOT. My dad's friend's son who is now a doctor gets payed 200K in his first year. VERY good pay when you become a doctor and pay goes higher as your year go by. But there is a downside, my dad's friend's son has no time to use his money. (besides, paying for his medical school loans). He basically lives in the same apartment that he has had since his residency days and he still gets not enough sleep because he gets called by the hospital multiple times a day. They give him a vacation, one month, which is hardly enough for the 11 months of torture he has had. He is not regretting his decision to become a doctor because he accepted the fact he will work his ass of to follow his dream of becoming a doctor. you have to love and be 10204993 percent sure you want to go to medical school and become a doctor because if you have even a slight doubt of becoming a doctor, you will not survive living in the library studying your brains out and finishing med school, going into residency, then etc. If people say med school isn't hardcore and you don't study all the time, you guys do not know medical school. Kinglin, you kinda do need chemistry so sumhow try to take it. Oh not to mention how hard it is to get into medical school. OK, now I am just being a b*tch, so you guys have a good day

Well that was exactly the response of one of my family members in residency. Prolly gets paid something north of 30K so more than min wage but less than 50K. Consider the fact that he works his arse off more than anyone I have EVER seen and you have a pretty bad financial combination.

If you plan on going into medicine for money do yourself a favor.....dont. Its not worth it.

I am curious do you happen to be of South Asian descent?

mahras2,
If people did not go into medicine, how would mankind survive. Haha, don't worry I know what you mean. kinglin, just think about about you options and make sure you will be happy living in those sleepless conditions
