Kluge Scholar Program?

Hi, everyone. Much to my surprise, I was recently accepted to Columbia University as a Kluge Scholar. Because I was so sure I was wasn't getting into Columbia, I sort of had tunnel vision towards the University of Chicago (I got in EA). But now I'm rethinking my options. The scholar program looks like a sweet deal, but I was wondering if anyone with any experience with the Kluge program had any info I could use. Any anectdotal evidence of the perks of the Kluge scholarship? And is there any reason to choose Columbia over UChicago? How about without the scholar program? Thanks for Any advice offered! (:
I'm an undecided major, btw.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump.

Congrats on your scholar distinction! I think Columbia’s incredible location is an advantage over any other schools in the country; you get to live in NYC, yet still have a beautiful and tranquil campus to wake up to every morning. While Chicago is also an excellent academic institution, Columbia offers a network of internship and job opportunities in NYC and abroad, whether it be in finance (a lot of grads go on to Wall Street), government (Barack CC83!), or academia (~90 Nobel prizes affiliated with Columbia) that is hard to beat. If you are interested in the sciences, Columbia’s school of engineering bring a diversity to research and facilities that a school with no engineering program cannot compete with.

Since I’m unfamiliar with the scholars program, I’ll leave that to anyone else.

come to columbia!

dlee93, I am in the same situation now! It seems that you ended up going to Columbia. What does the Kluge program entail??

luxembourg, i am a former kluge scholar (graduate) and i can tell you a lot about the program. how it was for me, but also what it is like now (i am very close with the program directors, and i know the kluge family). feel free to pm me.

The CUSP (Columbia University Scholars Program) is kind of like the Masons of Columbia University. No one really knows what they do, and neither do we. I’m a Kluge scholar, and basically what it means is that two years of your work-study is replaced by a grant, you probably got lots of money from the late Mr. Kluge, who donated $400 million to Columbia.
You will be in a special group which meets twice a week and do some kind of “research” program. It’s kind of a waste of time, and you’ll have to go to a few lectures, not a big deal. The cool part is that, A) it looks cool on your resume, and B) you can apply for CUSP money, which means that you get money to go do some kind of independent research somewhere during the summer. That, and they might give you some other opportunities here and there. It’s pretty special, so congrats, but it’s really not that exciting.
