Our HS geometry course this year was a disaster, and little was learned. Geometry is on the SAT, so we think DS needs to fill in the gaps by taking an online geometry course this summer. We don't need credits, we just need the real learning to take place.

It needs to be a structured course with assignments and assessments, to keep DS organized, and to cover the full range of topics. If I just tell this kid to go to Khan Academy, for example, not much will happen. DS is lifeguarding, on an erratic schedule, so he needs to be able to work on geometry at his own pace and schedule.

I know BYU offers this sort of thing online, and rather affordably, but we've been disappointed with their materials in the past. Any suggestions of where to enroll?

Look at derekowens.com. The course consists of listening to lectures and following along with course notes. There are graded homework assignments and tests (he could skip the additional homework for the sections he already knows well).

They charge by the month which would be good in your case. You can look at sample lectures on YouTube to see if he likes the teaching style. My son is currently enrolled and we are pleased.

Have personal experience with Johns Hopkins CTY course online and TAA (and BYU and UMASS Dartmouth online). Check both out to see how you feel about the format. Geometry is not as impt on the SATs as is algebra but it is there.

DS took Honors Geometry at Hopkins CTY-there were paper materials, online lectures, problem sets, and instructor feedback. IT was well organized. They are also accredited though you dont get credit for the same course twice so if your student passed it already in HS, that is moot.

If he doesn’t need credit and you are only interested in SAT prep (or ACT) just get the prep books and review the geometry concepts that are actually covered on those college entrance tests. If you are looking for SAT math prep, don’t waste a lot of time studying a lot of things that are not on the test.

If you really want a review course, The Great Courses has a High School Geometry course which includes thirty, 30-minute lessons on DVD. You can get a workbook that has about 10 problems per lesson/answer key to go along with it. If you want a longer textbook, I recommend Saxon Geometry. (Saxon is a math curriculum very popular with homeschoolers, also used in some schools). The Saxon course has a 120-lesson textbook, answer key, and test book. Very straightforward/self-explanatory with plenty of examples–read and do. You can probably find used copies of both of these (Great Courses High School Geometry and Saxon Geometry) online.

D1 took BYU’s algebra courses. According to my husband, it was a well designed rigorous course. For SAT prep, consider Khan Academy and a tutor who can identify the weak points and focus on teaching to those areas.
