Knox vs. Earlham, Beloit & Hendrix

Hi! I've been accepted to four colleges so far and am waiting on about six others. I haven't been able to visit any of them and may not be able to visit them in order to make my final decision. (Unable to afford airfare) I'm looking for comparisons between the following schools: Earlham, Knox, Beloit and Hendrix.

Academic programs that interest me: International relations, anthropology/sociology (I know that Beloit has a top anthro program), gender studies, urban studies, educational policy/reform, strong Spanish program(?) (REALLY want to be fluent)

Are they very similar in terms of academic quality? Can you tell me more about the social life at each school? I'd like to live and learn with people who are respectful, kind and smart. Are students interested in their work? Are class discussions lively? How do food/dorms/facilities compare?

Thanks so much!

Hey- I don’t know much about the three other schools, but I did visit Knox this year and seriously considered attending there next year.
In my opinion, it is an amazing school. Nearly everyone I met was friendly, smart, and included in a bunch of school activities and such. The library was beautiful, as were many of the buildings. Also, the classes I attended were all discussion-based and SO interesting. I had a blast. The only big downside to me was the food… it wasn’t very good lol. As for the dorms, I liked them a lot. They’re not luxurious or anything, but the one I stayed in was suite-style and I loved it. Basically, there’s four rooms all centered around one large common room.
Anyways, good luck with your decision! I hope I helped a little :)

I cannot comment on Earlham or Hendrix but I can tell you that Knox and Beloit are both very good schools. My youngest went to Knox and loved it. She is now fluent in Spanish thanks to study abroad. Both schools pride themselves with being a little quirky and thinking outside the box. Most of the kids were serious about their studies. It’s funny to read about the food. When my daughter was there they had gotten a new top chef and the kids loved him. He was very open to suggestions. I wonder if he is still there and maybe was on vacation when the other poster listed? Knox and Beloit are both in small cities but there is lots to do on campus.
