Korean student. Don't be a racist and help me, people. (AP German takers, welcome)

Hi people, this is my first post :)

Like the title says, I'm a Korean student who wants to apply to an American college.

I hardly have any contact with any other kids who want to go to college in the States because I spent most of my teenage years in Korea (at a Korean high school, obviously), although I'm currently living in Germany for my last year of high school (German gymnasium), so I don't have any access to college counselors or any of that fancy stuff some people are privileged with.

So far I've taken two APs, World History and Biology--both 5s. I also took SAT subject tests: English Literature 750, Math Level II 770, Biology M 750, World History 780. This week and the week after that, I'm scheduled to take AP German and AP English Language and Composition. In June, I'm going to have to re-take the SAT I, because I botched the last one. (I was sick as a pig.) I figured that I did fairly well so far, considering that I received no help from anybody with test prep. So on to the point-- and I'll be blunt here.. Is this good? Should I take some more this year?

My essays are pretty good, and I'm comfortable speaking with people--including interviewers--without freezing up and saying something stupid. I'm afraid I haven't done alot of extra curriculars yet, although I plan to do some intensively once this wave of tests passes over.. All I've really done is work with the phsycially disabled for a short time, and more significantly, with Amnesty International Korea (when I was 16~17). I was a coordinator for two months, and I learned alot from this..I don't know useful it will be, but just for the record..

I've been in Germany for almost two months, and I studied German for about a year before that, and my German is mediocre to slightly better than mediocre. If anybody has any info on how hard the AP German will be, any help or pointers will be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry this post is so desultory, but as you can see, I'm very apprehensive of my shot at a US college because I don't know if I did enough APs or SAT IIs. I don't have a standard to compare myself to and I flat out know very little about individual colleges.. Of course I WANT to go to Brown or Columbia, but I'm generally a very realistic person so I'm also leaving less prestigious options open as well. The thing is that, since I don't live in the States, living costs coupled with tuition will be a bit straining on our family economy so I need to get a scholarship of some sort..Whether it be merit or charity....

So, if anybody is up for giving me some really general information and perhaps a compliment or two, please help me out!! I'm kidding about the compliments.

Thanks!

Whats with this?

It’s called a “joke.”

Read everything at this website: http://educationusa.state.gov/undergrad.htm

Then, make an appointment with the advisors at the counseling center that is closest to you. They may not have much experience with Koreans who are living in Germany, but they have access to an international network of counselors, and one of their colleagues somewhere has encountered a student with a situation similar to yours.

Lastly, no admissions officer in the USA expects international applicants to look exactly like US applicants. They WANT international students to actually BE different. That is the whole point of seeking diversity. You are not expected to be a clone of an age peer who has been in the US educational system for his or her entire education.

Wishing you all the best.

Don’t be a racist

I still don’t understand why that’s funny.

Anyway, granted you do well on your SATs and write fantastic essays on why you are better than other people who have more ECs, you can aim for Columbia, Brown etc.

p.s. Haha, yes your SAT IIs are enough. You took 4…and got high scores.

Hey SAT 1 is a lot harder without prep. SAT 2 is easier in that sense as it questions you within a subject. I recommend test prep for SAT 1 to boost your score and it obviously is a good thing. There are tons of free online resources and you can try to get the blue book or some other prep book from a library…

Also, since you are good in subjects – try to take the ACT instead of SAT1. You can prep for free in a very rudimentary manner, or for very little, off their website. You also dont have to show any of the scores, so if you do poorly, colleges dont need to see it. ACT consists of a section on science, math, english comprehension and english grammar and an essay. Doesnt have the crazy english stuff that sat has. Good luck.

Yo man! you’d better check gohackers.com,huge Korean students community.
