Koreans should not take SAT II Korean

I strongly believe that Koreans should not be allowed to take the SAT II Korean exam!! It's not fair how they TOTALLY screw up the curve. I've been hard at work studying Korean for the passed year and I decided to take the SAT II test. I got a 750....Great right?? WRONG!!!!!! It turned out that more than half of the people who took that test scored an 800. I was SOOO upset and equally discouraged. I reapeat: NATIVE KOREANS MUST NOT TAKE THE SAT II KOREAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, i'm sure colleges know that if a kim or lee takes it and gets an 800, it isnt as valubale as a garcia taking it and getting a 750. So calm down, buddy, 750 is damn good.

yeah i totally agree, AP english language should not be taken by ANYONE who speaks english. i studied for years and did horrible
.... racist

:kill thread:

I agree! And americans shouldnt take the English part of the SAT, and those who know how to do math shouldn't do that either....Give me a break

too late. I took it and got a 790. Boo for missing one.
But seriously, these are here for the native koreans, ESPECIALLy the KOrean SATII b/c what school actually teaches KOrean? It's up for grabs for the Koreans, I think.
Try telling the same thing to the Chinese people and their SAT II. It just shows how competent you are in that language, and I think it's a good thing to measure up how good you are that particular language.

All American-born people should eat bananas and have fun playing at the beach... ahhhh Ellison... and read Cat in the Hat... and eat grass. YEA! I SECOND THAT! I agree to kill the thread.

"Knowledge is power."

Anyone know what happens if you get reported for too many offensive/random posts?

haha, no, but this is a racist thread and im leaving

Umm the English lit test assumes you know the English language. The Korean is dumbed down for someone who doesn't know Korean as a mother language?

The first poster's point was that taking a language course in your native language has no bearing on your academic ability. You're taking a remedial test for someone learning it as a second language, and it's included to be politically correct for people who want to study it on your own...whereas the German/French/Spanish are being taken by people learning it as a second language. Hence it's a gimp SAT for a Korean to take.

Well, the intent of this post is not racist. The author of this post merely expresses indignation at the curve being so much out of his/her favor. This post is to some degree justifiable. The sarcastic remarks that people who know english should not take english is a logical fallacy of an argument. You cannot compare the SAT English and SAT Korean. The SAT English is at a very diffucult level for a person in another country studying english, unlike the Korean which is at the basic Korean level. THE proper analogy would be a whole bunch of english students taking the ELPT to the disadvantage of the student foreign student who takes ELPT.

People, quit making stupid analogies to native English speakers taking English tests. There's no comparison - the English tests that you are referring to cover MUCH higher-level English than the level at which foreign language SAT IIs cover their languages, precisely because the English tests are meant to be taken by native speakers.

If there was a comparable English test (which was SO easy for native English speakers that a majority received a perfect score), then there would be a valid comparison. However, as is, your comments (and haste to label a poster making a genuine, if not necessarily valid point "racist"), are frankly sad.

I agree with you, randomperson.

"I agree! And americans shouldnt take the English part of the SAT, and those who know how to do math shouldn't do that either....Give me a break"

No offense, but this post contains a logical fallacy. SAT is DIFFICULT ENGLISH, Korean SAT II is BASIC KOREAN. A more logical comparison would be comparing KOREAN SAT II to ELPT.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I only wish to CORRECT LOGICAL FALLACIES --> those who commit the fallacies should see this as a learning experience and not an emotionally charged subject.

The thing is most colleges don't care about SAT II foreign languages anyway. I could easily get a 800 on SAT II Mandarin, but I'm not going to waste my money taking it.

JoelB, I understand why you are upset. It may comfort you to know that a person like you who is not a native Korean speaker will impress the college admissions people much more than a native Korean speaker who scored higher than you. It shows that you put yourself to the task of facing Koreans with you with the lingual disadvantage. Thus you prove yourself as working hard to attempt the test, while a native Korean speaker taking a test in Korean may be seen as lazy (he/she did not wish to study for another SAT II, so he/she slacked and took it in an obviously easy subject for him/her.

Advice for college with regards to this:
Adcoms are experts at recognizing this. Do not worry about this. And do not indicate in any manner that you are upset over this to your colleges of choice via essays etc. If you follow this advice, you will be seen in a high respect of character by adcoms for enduring this without making too much fuss over it.

His point is taking SAT II Korean is a give me compared to someone taking ANY other SAT II =x

Assuming it's not harder than the SAT II Spanish/English/French

Edit:

The guy below me's argument < my argument.

but saying that korean people shouldnt take the korean SAT II is stupid. It like saying that people who are insanely smart at math, which im sure there are many on this board, shouldnt take the SAT math portion. Curves for a SAT II are different and colleges will know what to look for when they see someone who has taken a foreign language SAT II.

what about when an american born korean takes it, they have the last name kim or lee, are they frowned upon? i believe they should not be

You're missing the point, the fact that hella people score 800 shows that native speaking Koreans take it predominately. He's saying it's cheap to take it if that's your native language, not that if you're Korean...you people are lame haha.

er...i already thought it's racist and unfair that there are SAT 2 Chinese/Korean/Spanish... but theres none for Vietnamese.
I just think giving tests in languages like this favor certain ppl.

hey im Korean... And I'm a Banana (Korean outside and white inside which to me is kinda sad) but yea i only got a 720 on the SAT II Korean Practice because they were making us do it and i felt like crap when i found out that everyone got at least a 790. Its okay you did better than me and I'm a korean so dont feel bad
