Oh on a side note. The NEX is almost open. It looks great...shelfs are stocked and I believe it is slate to open on 11 August :D

suzannegra, question: Be a pal & TELL me that there is a good choice of foodstuffs to keep a Mid happy & let a Mom take a break from sending these crazy boodle boxes. In other words....Do they have things like sugar & Lipton tea? The addiction to sweet tea is killing me! Junkfood? Soups? CANS OF RAVIOLI! FREAKING CAMERA BATTERIES? PLEASE! I MUST KNOW THIS!! LOL

Beware people. The longer they are there, the more they drive ya nuts. "Hey Mamma, send a loaf of bread & chicken salad in a can." INDEED! I wanna quit now. Surely with the store re-opening, he can get this stuff all by him's little selfs? :D Make me a happy Mom suzannegra. TELL ME.

the new NEX looks to be amazing. we're all quite excited.

Nay, Nay, Jamzmom, the stuff may all be in the NEX but the thrill of opening that box is what their looking for

LOL,,,I peeked in and indeed it does look like food there too....and for sure batteries! I did see various items in cans; perhaps of the kind that the Mids will like. You can always send him an empty box with a note that says...go to the NEX, Love, Mom :D

I spoke to an executive at Hess Oil and they supply bunker oil to alot of ships in the area including the NY harbour area. He is going to speak to some of his people at work about a corporate donation for the Kings Pointer. Would KP be too embarrassed to accept free oil?

^^^^ Seriously!?!?! Wow! How awesome are you!!?! Hope that works out. Let us know what you hear back!!

while you're at it, ask 'em if I can come by and get a fill up... :)

Seriously - I think it's a great idea - and if KP was too embarrassed, they really need to get over it.

I'm hoping that with all of the bad press the oil companies are getting about their huge profits that this is a way to get some good PR. I will call the head of the waterfront this week to see if they are interested.

Yup. They probably wouldn't miss a few 100 gallons or so for a good cause. :D

Here is a first look at the NEX. I actually even see a rack of sunglasses. How I look forward to the phrase: "Nope. Go get it yourself boy!"

I looked at the website for the Alumni News about the NEX. The article mentioned that alumni would be allowed to shop in the store.

Over parent's weekend, the families of the mids would go and buy KP clothing for themselves and the mids. Are we not going to be allowed to purchase clothing anymore. Please don't say, only with your s/d along, because they are too busy to go there.

I thought I read early on somewhere that part of the deal with the NEX is that parents/friends would be allowed to shop there during certain times.

I see the sunglasses in the NEX too!

Look for the NC table at parents weekend to get your sunglass retainers!

Or order online www.usmma-nc.us/saleitems.htm,they look great! If you order before parents weekend (and wear them) we will be able to recognized each other as fellow College Confidential Family.

If you want to order in bulk I can cut you a better deal.

My son called and said store is great. They even sell video games. Of course needs MORE money so he can shop in the store after we just spent about $200 in Target before he went back to school. I'm just glad I won't get any more SOSs for deodorant. Hopefully they should have a selection there. I'm also curious, parents do you give your kid a budget every month? My son is constantly calling asking for money. I put $100 in his account when he returned back to school hoping it would get him through for the month and after ten days he is calling for more. He claims it goes on food. Does anyone else have the same problem? Or is $100 not a reasonable amount?

Not really, our son has been pretty frugal (so far), but he always has been.

So far he has asked for a watch and iron. Has not asked for money and he will also make the money go a long way.

Son told me he went in the Naval Exchange and was impressed with what they had. Asked him about prices of things and he said he was not sure. He does not go out and shop or spend a lot. Thus he did not know if the prices were good or not.

Good Luck,

CPASteve

When I was a mid my dad would deposit about 100 a month for me into my bank account. Sometimes mom would slip me a little more and sometimes Dad would give a little less. It did fine for me. Was I able to go to the City every weekend like some people...no, but I shouldn't have done that anyway. If your kid has a trip to the city planned you can count on that taking 100 bucks easy.

Later in the year they'll be able to pick up odd jobs to supplement that income which is what I did and once they go to sea they'll earn a small paycheck. I think 100 a month is reasonable for what is needed, but I would be open to supplementing that if they had some specific reason such as a group trip into the city for museums/show or some other similar need.

Prices at the NEX are good...they are NOT NY prices. A gift card to the NEX would be a great gift for birthday, etc. Also the Plebe Candidates should be able to buy whatever is needed at the NEX now :)

Will the Nex be available for online orders? If not, will we be able to shop online again somewhere else? Really miss that and would like shirts, etc for parents weekend

yes, we average about $100 per month for DS's first year.

Then he got odd jobs at the country clubs and on campus, and that became his main source of spending money.

And then it was his sea year money.

And again, once he gets back it will be his sea year earnings that he is expected to use for the majority of his spending money.

We do usually pay for his Amtrak train ticket back and forth, but taxies/busses/LIRR ~ That is on him ~ out of his spending money.
